A composed performance at the Olimpico Grande Torino lifts the Granata clear of danger as Lazio struggle for rhythm on Matchday 27.
Torino FC earned a vital 2-0 victory over SS Lazio on Matchday 27 of Serie A, marking a dream league debut for head coach Roberto D’Aversa.
After back-to-back defeats, Torino needed a response to pull away from the relegation conversation. They got it in a controlled, if not spectacular, performance against a Lazio side that once again failed to find consistency.
Simeone Strikes First
In a sparsely filled Olimpico Grande Torino and at a modest tempo, it was the home side who showed greater urgency. Torino circulated possession confidently and were rewarded in the 21st minute.
A deflected effort from Duván Zapata fell invitingly inside the box, and Giovanni Simeone reacted quickest. Slipping between Luca Pellegrini and Ivan Provedel, he nudged the ball over the line for 1-0. The Argentine forward was lively throughout and nearly doubled his tally minutes later, only to be denied by Provedel’s sharp intervention.
Lazio struggled to respond. Their best moment of the first half came in the 37th minute through Mattia Zaccagni and Belahyane, but Coco’s crucial block preserved Torino’s advantage.
Zapata Seals It
The second half followed a similar script — steady, compact, and largely controlled by the hosts.
In the 53rd minute, Torino delivered the decisive blow. Obrador whipped in a superb cross from the left, and Zapata rose above Provstgaard to power a header beyond Provedel. A classic center-forward finish that effectively ended the contest.
Lazio attempted to raise the tempo late on, but their push lacked cohesion and conviction. Torino’s back three — anchored by Coco, Ismajli, and Ebosse — handled the pressure with minimal alarm.
A Confidence-Boosting Win
For Torino, this was less about flair and more about maturity and efficiency. Paleari was solid when called upon, Obrador influential from the flank, and the Simeone-Zapata partnership provided physical presence and clinical edge.
For Lazio, it was another flat display in league play. Cataldi showed energy in midfield, but the attack — particularly Ratkov — struggled to make an impact.
Torino climb to calmer waters in the standings. Lazio remain searching for league consistency, with Coppa Italia perhaps offering their best hope of a memorable campaign.
