Argentina looked out of the World Cup at 2-0 down, but Lionel Messi refused to let the story end there, sparking a stunning late comeback before Enzo Fernández completed the turnaround in stoppage time.
Argentina was almost gone. Down 2-0 in the 79th minute, with one foot and maybe more out of the World Cup, Lionel Scaloni’s team looked beaten.
But with Lionel Messi on the field, nothing is ever truly over.
Argentina produced one of the great knockout-stage comebacks, overturning Egypt’s two-goal lead in just over 10 minutes to win 3-2 and reach the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals, where it will face Switzerland.
For most of the night, it looked like Messi’s final World Cup chapter might end in heartbreak. He had a first-half penalty saved by Shobeir, hit the post with a brilliant free kick and kept running into an Egyptian goalkeeper who seemed ready to become the hero of the tournament.
Egypt had been outstanding. Ibrahim gave the Pharaohs the lead in the 15th minute, and Ziko doubled it in the 67th, putting Argentina on the edge of elimination. Mohamed Salah played like a true captain, Hassan was devastating in transition, and Shobeir produced a heroic performance in goal.
But then Messi took over.
In the 79th minute, he created the first crack in Egypt’s wall, delivering the assist for Cristian Romero’s goal. Suddenly Argentina believed again.
Four minutes later, Messi scored himself, forcing the ball past the same goalkeeper who had denied him from the penalty spot earlier in the match. It was his 21st World Cup goal and the moment that changed the entire emotional direction of the night.
Egypt tried to resist. Shobeir kept getting hands to everything he could. Salah, Hassan and Ziko had all done enough to make history on another night. But Argentina had found its wave, and once Messi gave the Albiceleste life, the comeback felt almost inevitable.
The winner came in stoppage time. Lautaro Martínez, introduced from the bench, delivered the perfect cross into the box. Enzo Fernández arrived and headed home the 3-2 goal that completed an extraordinary turnaround.
Fernández had not played his cleanest match, but he was there when Argentina needed him most. Lautaro added a decisive assist. Romero began the comeback. But the signature on this night belonged, once again, to Messi.
He missed a penalty. He hit the post. He kept trying. Then he delivered an assist, scored the equalizer and carried Argentina from disaster to survival.
Egypt leaves the tournament with enormous pride after a performance full of courage, quality and belief. Argentina moves on because its No. 10 is still immortal.
