Switzerland wins 4-3 on penalties

After more than seven decades, Switzerland is back in the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals.

Murat Yakin’s team survived a tense and largely tactical Round of 16 battle against Colombia, winning 4-3 on penalties after 120 goalless minutes. It was not one of the most spectacular knockout matches of the tournament, but for Switzerland, it became one of the most important nights in its World Cup history.

For long stretches, defenses dominated. Both teams had technical and fast attacking players on the field, but neither side found the rhythm, space or final pass needed to take control. Switzerland stayed compact, Colombia tried to create through Luis Díaz and James Rodríguez, but the match remained locked in a cautious tactical battle.

Chances were rare in regulation time. Switzerland leaned on the experience of Granit Xhaka, the defensive structure around Elvedi, Akanji and Rodriguez, and the reliability of Gregor Kobel in goal. Colombia, meanwhile, defended with discipline and tried to wait for the right moment in transition.

The best chances arrived in extra time, and they belonged to Colombia. First, Lucumí hit the crossbar, coming close to breaking Swiss hearts. Then Campaz created another dangerous moment, giving Colombia its clearest attacking spark after coming off the bench.

But Switzerland held on.

The match went to penalties, where the story shifted from Vargas to Vargas. Colombia goalkeeper Camilo Vargas, known for his penalty-saving ability, could not take control of the shootout. On the other side, Kobel made the decisive difference, stopping Hernández’s attempt and giving Switzerland the advantage it needed.

Then Ruben Vargas delivered the historic final blow. Cool under pressure, he converted the decisive penalty and sent Switzerland into the quarterfinals for the first time since 1954.

It was a night defined by nerves, structure and small margins. Xhaka showed his leadership from the spot. Kobel was decisive both during the match and in the shootout. Ruben Vargas entered late and became the hero of Swiss soccer history.

For Colombia, the disappointment is enormous. Luis Díaz was one of the few players able to create danger consistently, Lucumí came closest to scoring, and Campaz made a strong impact from the bench. But James Rodríguez struggled to leave his mark, and Colombia could not turn its extra-time pressure into a goal.

Switzerland now gets the ultimate reward: a quarterfinal against Argentina and Lionel Messi.

It was not a beautiful win. It was not a classic. But for Switzerland, it was historic.
