Despite playing nearly 75 minutes with a man advantage, Atalanta fall at the Mapei Stadium as Koné and Thorstvedt shine on Matchday 27.
US Sassuolo Calcio pulled off one of the surprises of Matchday 27 in Serie A, defeating Atalanta BC 2-1 despite being reduced to ten men after just 16 minutes.
Atalanta, still riding the emotional and physical high of their Champions League triumph over Borussia Dortmund, looked drained — and paid the price at the Mapei Stadium.
Red Card, No Collapse
The match seemed to tilt decisively early on when Andrea Pinamonti was sent off in the 16th minute for a reckless challenge. Down a man, Sassuolo appeared vulnerable.
Instead, they thrived.
In the 23rd minute, Koné opened the scoring with a powerful finish after sharp work down the flank. The home side defended compactly and transitioned with precision, exploiting Atalanta’s sluggish reactions.
Goalkeeper Arijanet Muric delivered a commanding performance, producing key stops to frustrate Gianluca Scamacca and company. Atalanta controlled possession but lacked clarity and intensity in the final third.
Thorstvedt’s Moment of Magic
The defining moment came in the 69th minute. Kristoffer Thorstvedt produced a spectacular individual effort — a strike of rare quality that left Carnesecchi with no chance and brought the stadium to its feet.
It was the kind of goal that justifies the ticket price.
Laurienté, constantly dangerous, registered two assists on the night, while Berardi’s movement and creativity added further edge to Sassuolo’s counterattacks.
Too Little, Too Late
Atalanta finally responded late on. Substitute Yunus Musah pulled one back in the 89th minute, aided by Zappacosta’s involvement in the build-up. But the comeback push proved insufficient.
Sead Kolasinac endured a difficult outing defensively, while Scamacca struggled to impose himself against a disciplined Sassuolo back line. Even with numerical superiority for the majority of the match, La Dea failed to break down Grosso’s organized side.
For Sassuolo, this was a statement win built on resilience, tactical discipline, and moments of brilliance.
