Switzerland 2-0 Algeria: Manzambi Shines as Swiss End 70-Year Knockout Curse

Switzerland broke one of its longest World Cup barriers, beating Algeria 2-0 with goals from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye to reach the last 16.

Switzerland has finally broken the spell.

Murat Yakin’s team defeated Algeria 2-0 in the Round of 32 of the FIFA World Cup, winning a knockout-stage match for the first time in more than 70 years. It was a mature, authoritative and confident performance from a Swiss side that is no longer just trying to survive at this tournament. It is aiming higher.

The last time Switzerland reached a World Cup quarterfinal was in 1954. Now, after this convincing win, that target no longer feels like fantasy.

The match was decided by two goals, one early and one immediately after halftime. Breel Embolo opened the scoring in the 10th minute, once again showing his striker’s instinct by being in the right place at the right time. The move came from Johan Manzambi, who was unstoppable in the opening phase and confirmed himself as one of the most exciting breakout players of this World Cup.

Manzambi’s physical power, direct running and ability to break lines caused constant problems for Algeria. The North African side never found a way to control him, and Switzerland used his energy to set the tone.

Algeria struggled from the beginning. Riyad Mahrez never got into the match, Nabil Bentaleb looked slow in midfield, and Maza failed to convince as a false nine. Vladimir Petković’s team lacked speed, creativity and attacking presence, rarely threatening Gregor Kobel’s goal.

Switzerland, by contrast, looked balanced in every zone. Denis Zakaria gave the team leadership and physical presence, Manuel Akanji and Granit Xhaka controlled the spine of the side, and Ndoye brought the spark on the right.

The second goal arrived in the 46th minute and effectively ended the contest. Ndoye received the ball near the edge of the box and struck a precise right-footed shot to make it 2-0. It was his first World Cup goal and a deserved reward for one of his brightest performances of the tournament.

From that point on, Switzerland managed the game with authority. Algeria tried to change the rhythm with substitutions, but the match never truly shifted. Mahrez was replaced after a disappointing night, while Bensebaini and Aït-Nouri struggled defensively under Swiss pressure and movement.

For Yakin, this was the kind of performance that builds belief. Switzerland did not just win; it looked like a team with structure, confidence and purpose. The experienced core delivered, the younger players added energy, and the defensive control never broke.

Switzerland now waits for the winner of Ghana vs Colombia. On Tuesday in Vancouver, Akanji, Xhaka and company will play for a place in the quarterfinals — a stage the country has not reached since 1954.

For Algeria, the tournament ends with frustration. For Switzerland, the dream continues — and this time, it feels stronger than history.
