Belgium 3-2 Senegal (2-2 after 90′): Tielemans Completes Stunning Extra-Time Comeback

Belgium looked finished at 0-2 down, but Romelu Lukaku sparked the comeback, Youri Tielemans forced extra time and then converted the decisive penalty to send the Red Devils into the last 16.

Belgium was nearly out. Then, in the space of a few minutes, everything changed.

The Red Devils produced one of the wildest comebacks of the World Cup Round of 32, beating Senegal 3-2 after extra time in a match that seemed lost until the 86th minute. Down 2-0 and unable to create any real danger for most of the night, Belgium found life through Romelu Lukaku, belief through Youri Tielemans and salvation from the penalty spot deep into extra time.

Senegal will wonder how this one got away.

The African side started with more energy, more clarity and more danger. Ismaïla Sarr had an immediate chance after a rare mistake from Thibaut Courtois, but with the goal open he hit the post. Moments later, Sarr struck the woodwork again with a header from a perfect Sadio Mané cross. This time, Diarra reacted first to the rebound and gave Senegal a deserved 1-0 lead in the 25th minute.

Belgium looked flat. Kevin De Bruyne never found rhythm, Charles De Ketelaere was almost invisible, and Jérémy Doku appeared only in flashes. The best Belgian chance of the first half fell to De Cuyper, but Diaw made an important save to keep Senegal in front.

Rudi Garcia changed the attack at halftime, sending on Lukaku for De Ketelaere. But Senegal came out strong again and doubled the lead in the 51st minute. Sarr controlled a long ball, attacked the Belgian defense and beat Courtois to make it 2-0.

At that point, Belgium looked out of answers. Senegal was aggressive, Mané was dangerous, Sarr was electric, and the Red Devils appeared too slow and disconnected to turn the match around.

Then came the late storm.

In the 86th minute, Lukaku gave Belgium hope, using his presence and instinct inside the box to pull one back. Three minutes later, Tielemans struck to make it 2-2, completely flipping the emotional weight of the game. Senegal, which had been close to a historic win, suddenly had to survive extra time.

The additional 30 minutes belonged more to Belgium, even if Senegal still had one huge chance through Mbaye to win it. But the African side had spent too much energy, and Belgium had momentum.

Tielemans became the decisive figure once again. The Belgium captain won a penalty in extra time, stepped up himself and converted in the 125th minute, completing a comeback that had looked impossible less than 40 minutes earlier.

It was not a clean Belgian performance. Courtois looked uncertain, the defense struggled badly with Sarr, and both De Bruyne and De Ketelaere had disappointing nights. But knockout soccer often rewards resilience more than control, and Belgium found a way to survive.

Senegal exits with enormous regret. Sarr and Mané were outstanding, Diarra was ready when called upon, and Niakhaté provided quality from the back. But Diaw’s late collapse and Mbaye’s missed chance will be hard to forget.

Belgium moves on to face the United States in the last 16. After this escape, Garcia’s team will know it cannot afford another night like this — but it will also know it has the character to come back from the edge.
