Napoli 0-2 Lazio: Cancellieri and Basic Shock Napoli as Lazio Dominate at the Maradona

A flat and error-prone Napoli fall at home, while Lazio capitalize with clinical finishing and a commanding defensive display to secure a crucial away win.

Lazio delivered a statement victory on Matchday 33, beating Napoli 2-0 at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona and effectively reshaping the Serie A title race. With Inter now sitting 12 points clear, the Scudetto appears all but decided.

For Napoli, it was a night to forget—plagued by defensive errors, lack of intensity, and underwhelming performances from key players.

Early Blow and Missed Chances Define First Half

Lazio wasted no time asserting control, taking the lead just six minutes in through Matteo Cancellieri, who tapped in from close range after a low cross by Teden Mengi Taylor, exposing Napoli’s disorganized backline.

The home side’s struggles continued midway through the half when Stanislav Lobotka gifted possession and then fouled Tijjani Noslin in the box, conceding a penalty. However, Napoli goalkeeper Vanja Milinković-Savić came to the rescue, saving Mattia Zaccagni’s spot-kick to keep the deficit at one.

Despite the lifeline, Napoli failed to respond meaningfully, with Kevin De Bruyne and André-Frank Zambo Anguissa both struggling to find rhythm.

Basic Punishes Napoli Again

Napoli head coach Antonio Conte made changes at halftime, pulling off Anguissa and De Bruyne, but the adjustments had little impact.

In the 57th minute, Lazio doubled their lead. Nuno Tavares burst past Mathías Olivera and delivered the ball into the box, where Toma Basic finished clinically at the near post, catching Milinković-Savić off guard.

From there, Lazio remained in control, with Mario Gila leading a rock-solid defense and the midfield trio dictating tempo and transitions effectively.

Napoli Collapse, Lazio Cruise

Napoli looked disjointed and lacked urgency throughout the second half. Even with further tactical changes, they failed to create significant scoring opportunities.

Lazio, meanwhile, managed the game with confidence, with standout performances from Noslin, Basic, and Taylor, who combined energy with technical quality.

The result lifts Lazio to 47 points and boosts their momentum ahead of a crucial Coppa Italia clash, while Napoli must now focus on securing a Champions League spot amid growing pressure.
