Portugal 2-1 Croatia: Gonçalo Ramos Wins It in Unreal Stoppage-Time Finish: Gonçalo Ramos Wins It in Unreal Stoppage-Time Finish

Cristiano Ronaldo equalized from the penalty spot, Gonçalo Ramos scored the winner in the 94th minute, and Portugal survived a wild late VAR scare to reach the last 16 against Spain.

Portugal is through. Croatia is out. But for several surreal minutes, nobody inside the stadium could be completely sure.

In one of the most dramatic finishes of the World Cup Round of 32, Portugal beat Croatia 2-1 after a tense, emotional and chaotic knockout match. Ivan Perišić gave Croatia the lead early in the second half, Cristiano Ronaldo equalized from the penalty spot, and Gonçalo Ramos became the hero with a 94th-minute header from a Rafael Leão cross.

Then came the madness.

Croatia thought it had found an extraordinary equalizer deep into stoppage time when Joško Gvardiol turned the ball into the net. The celebrations were wild, the Portuguese bench froze, and the match seemed headed for extra time. But after a long VAR review, the goal was disallowed because Matanović had touched the ball from an offside position.

Portugal survived. Croatia was eliminated. Roberto Martínez’s team now moves into the last 16, where it will face Spain.

The game had been tight and tactical for long stretches. Croatia relied on the experience of Luka Modrić and Mateo Kovačić, while Portugal struggled to find clean spaces against a disciplined Croatian midfield. The first half ended scoreless, but the match exploded immediately after the break.

Portugal had a huge chance in the 46th minute, when Nuno Mendes broke through one-on-one with Livaković but chose to look for Ronaldo instead of shooting. Croatia punished that missed opportunity seven minutes later. Stanišić created the move, Cancelo lost track of Perišić, and the Croatian veteran finished powerfully to make it 1-0.

Portugal reacted. Leão smashed a shot against the crossbar in the 58th minute, and the pressure began to grow. In the 68th minute, Ronaldo stepped up from the penalty spot and delivered, scoring with a central but powerful strike to bring Portugal level.

Croatia still had chances to win it. Kovačić was outstanding, driving through midfield, creating danger and nearly scoring twice in the 76th minute: first hitting the post, then forcing a superb save from Diogo Costa. He was Croatia’s best player on the night, full of quality, movement and personality.

But Portugal had the final attacking spark.

In the 94th minute, Leão found space and delivered a perfect cross. Gonçalo Ramos attacked it with conviction and headed Portugal into the lead. It looked like the decisive moment — until Croatia’s late push created one final storm.

Gvardiol’s disallowed goal will be remembered as one of the strangest and most painful moments of Croatia’s tournament. For Portugal, it was a warning and a release at the same time.

After the final whistle, Ronaldo dedicated the joy of the victory to Diogo Jota, adding an emotional note to a night already filled with drama.

Portugal did not produce its cleanest performance, but it showed resilience, depth and belief. Ronaldo brought the equalizer, Leão created the winner, Ramos finished the job, and Diogo Costa stood tall when Croatia threatened to turn the match back.

Now comes Spain. After a finish like this, Portugal enters the last 16 with momentum, emotion and the feeling that surviving chaos can sometimes be the first step toward something bigger.
