Benfica 2–0 Napoli: Rios Dominates as Partenopei Suffer Costly Champions League Setback

Richard Rios scores one and creates another, Barreiro dazzles, and Napoli collapse after a disastrous first half hour at the Estádio da Luz.

Napoli’s Champions League campaign took a serious hit in Lisbon, where Benfica earned a deserved 2–0 victory that exposed the Partenopei’s defensive frailties and lack of sharpness. After picking up momentum with two positive results, Antonio Conte’s team stumbled heavily, suffering its third defeat in the league-phase format.

The opening 25 minutes were a nightmare for the Italian champions. Benfica came out with intensity, pressing high, closing spaces, and suffocating Napoli’s buildup. Mourinho surprised everyone by starting the mobile Ivanovic in attack instead of Pavlidis, and the Croatian forward immediately caused problems. He missed a clear one-on-one at the 11-minute mark, striking directly at Milinković-Savić, and moments later Aursnes wasted an equally huge chance from point-blank range.

Napoli were passive, slow, and second-best everywhere. Benfica’s breakthrough arrived in the 20th minute—ironically from a harmless-looking cross. McTominay failed to clear properly, instead teeing up Rios, who pounced decisively from close range. It was a deserved lead and a wake-up call for Napoli, who finally began to grow into the match.

Di Lorenzo tested Trubin, and the visitors created more pressure near halftime, but Benfica still had the better chances, with Otamendi twice threatening on set pieces.

The second half began with renewed vigor from Napoli, but Benfica struck immediately and effectively. Rios, again at the heart of the action, delivered a perfect ball across the face of goal at the 49th minute. Barreiro darted in front of everyone and finished with an exquisite backheel—an outstanding moment of technical brilliance that doubled the advantage.

From there, Benfica controlled the tempo, managed possession wisely, and absorbed Napoli’s attempts to react. Neres tried to create from the right, McTominay pushed with physicality, and Politano added some spark after coming on, but Højlund remained isolated and ineffective.

In the end, Napoli never truly threatened to re-open the match, while Benfica celebrated a crucial second straight win that breathes new life into their European journey.

Conte’s side now face enormous pressure heading into matches against Copenhagen and Chelsea if they hope to avoid a premature and bitter elimination from the Champions League.
