Mexico vs. England World Cup Match Could Be Moved Earlier Due to Severe Weather Threat

FIFA is evaluating a schedule change for Sunday’s Round of 16 showdown at Estadio Azteca as thunderstorms and lightning are forecast for Mexico City.

FIFA is considering moving Sunday’s FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match between Mexico and England to an earlier kickoff because of severe weather expected in Mexico City.

The match is currently scheduled to be played at the iconic Estadio Azteca at 6:00 p.m. local time, but forecasts predicting heavy rain, thunderstorms and possible lightning during the late afternoon have prompted organizers to review the schedule.

According to reports, FIFA and the two national federations are discussing the possibility of bringing kickoff forward by approximately six hours.

If approved, the match would instead begin at 12:00 p.m. local time, allowing both teams to avoid the worst of the expected weather conditions.

No official decision has been announced yet.

The concern stems from the possibility of delays similar to those seen earlier in the tournament, when adverse weather disrupted the match between Mexico and Ecuador. FIFA’s weather protocols require play to be suspended or delayed whenever lightning poses a safety risk to players, officials and spectators.

Moving the kickoff earlier would reduce the likelihood of lengthy interruptions and help ensure the knockout match is completed under safe conditions.

Both teams are awaiting FIFA’s final decision as preparations continue for one of the most anticipated Round of 16 matches of the tournament.

An official announcement is expected once weather conditions are reassessed and all logistical considerations have been finalized.
