Fiorentina 1-1 Atalanta: Comuzzo Own Goal Denies Viola Win in Serie A Finale

Fiorentina close their season with a draw at the Artemio Franchi after Piccoli’s opener is canceled out late by an unfortunate own goal from Comuzzo

Fiorentina and Atalanta wrapped up their Serie A campaigns with a 1-1 draw in Florence on the opening fixture of Matchday 38. The Viola looked set to finish a difficult season with a home victory thanks to Roberto Piccoli’s first-half strike, but an own goal by Pietro Comuzzo in the closing stages handed Atalanta a deserved equalizer.

The result changes little for either side. Atalanta had already secured qualification for next season’s UEFA Conference League before kickoff, while Fiorentina ended an inconsistent campaign with a performance full of effort but little attacking brilliance.

The visitors started with greater attacking intent and repeatedly tested Oliver Christensen, who delivered one of his best performances of the season between the posts for Fiorentina. Atalanta created several opportunities but struggled with their finishing, either missing the target or finding the Danish goalkeeper in excellent form.

Fiorentina broke the deadlock in the 39th minute. Marco Brescianini played an excellent through ball into the path of Piccoli, whose shot was initially pushed onto the post by Marco Sportiello before crossing the line for the opener.

The second half was more open, with chances at both ends. Christensen produced a brilliant save to deny Davide Zappacosta, while Sportiello also remained alert to keep Fiorentina from doubling their advantage.

Atalanta eventually found their equalizer in the 82nd minute. Zappacosta delivered a dangerous low cross toward Gianluca Scamacca, but Comuzzo slid in ahead of the striker and inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.

The draw brings the curtain down on the Serie A season for both clubs, who will now look ahead to the summer and preparations for the new campaign beginning in late August.
