Milan 2-3 Atalanta: Rossoneri Collapse at San Siro as Champions League Hopes Fade

Atalanta stunned Milan 3-2 at San Siro on Serie A Matchday 36 behind goals from Ederson, Davide Zappacosta, and Giacomo Raspadori, deepening the Rossoneri crisis in the race for Champions League qualification.

Milan’s season hit a new low on Sunday night as Atalanta secured a deserved 3-2 victory at San Siro, pushing the Rossoneri down to fourth place and intensifying pressure on Massimiliano Allegri and club management.

The atmosphere inside the stadium was already tense before kickoff amid growing fan protests directed at the club hierarchy, particularly CEO Giorgio Furlani. By the end of the night, boos echoed throughout San Siro after another disastrous defensive display.

Atalanta wasted no time punishing Milan’s fragile back line. Just seven minutes into the match, Ederson found space outside the box and curled a precise finish beyond Mike Maignan after passive defending from the Rossoneri.

Milan struggled badly to react. Adrien Rabiot struck the post early on, but it proved to be one of the few meaningful moments from the hosts during a first half dominated by Gianluca Palladino’s side.

Atalanta doubled their lead in the 30th minute when Davide Zappacosta burst past Strahinja Pavlovic and Matteo Gabbia before calmly finishing to make it 2-0.

The Rossoneri attack never found rhythm. Santiago Gimenez was completely neutralized by Isak Hien, while Rafael Leão endured another difficult evening, eventually leaving the field to loud whistles from sections of the home crowd.

Any hopes of a comeback disappeared shortly after halftime. Giacomo Raspadori capped another brilliant performance at San Siro by scoring Atalanta’s third goal in the 52nd minute after Milan’s defense once again failed to react quickly enough inside the box.

The Curva Sud began leaving the stadium as frustration boiled over, while Atalanta comfortably controlled the remainder of the match.

Milan managed two late consolation goals — Pavlovic scored with a header in the 89th minute before Christopher Nkunku converted a stoppage-time penalty — but the result never truly looked in doubt.

For Atalanta, the victory effectively secures seventh place and keeps alive hopes that it could become enough for European qualification depending on the outcome of the Coppa Italia final later this week.
