Medical tests ease initial fears for Napoli captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo, though a lengthy absence is still expected.
Napoli can finally breathe a cautious sigh of relief over Giovanni Di Lorenzo. After exiting early during the Serie A clash against Fiorentina at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, the club captain underwent medical examinations on Sunday morning that ruled out the worst-case scenario initially feared by Antonio Conte.
According to an official statement released by Napoli, Di Lorenzo has been diagnosed with a second-degree sprain to his left knee. The tests were carried out at the Pineta Grande Hospital and confirmed that surgery will not be required, easing concerns of a potential cruciate ligament injury.
“Giovanni Di Lorenzo, who was forced off during yesterday’s match, underwent instrumental examinations today which revealed a second-degree sprain of the left knee,” the club announced. “The player will now undergo specialist consultations to define his rehabilitation program.”
Expected Recovery Time
While the diagnosis is reassuring, Di Lorenzo is still set to face a significant spell on the sidelines. The expected recovery period is estimated at six to eight weeks, meaning the defender will miss a crucial stretch of Napoli’s season.
If the projected timeline is confirmed, Di Lorenzo is expected to be unavailable for league fixtures against Genoa, Roma, Atalanta, and Verona, as well as the Coppa Italia quarterfinal against Como.
Napoli’s medical staff are targeting a possible return around March 15, when the Azzurri are scheduled to face Lecce. Further matches against Cagliari and Milan would then follow as part of Di Lorenzo’s reintegration phase.
A Key Absence for Conte
Di Lorenzo’s injury comes at a delicate moment for Napoli, who are already dealing with a heavy workload and limited squad depth. As captain and ever-present figure under Conte, his absence will force tactical adjustments, particularly on the right flank.
Still, avoiding a season-ending injury represents a major relief. Napoli now shift focus to managing Di Lorenzo’s recovery carefully, with the aim of having their captain back for the decisive spring run-in.
