The Lazio coach opens up on Guendouzi’s exit, refereeing anger, and his commitment to the Biancocelesti despite a difficult season
Maurizio Sarri did not hide behind clichés. Speaking to DAZN, the Lazio coach delivered one of his most honest assessments of the season so far, touching on refereeing frustration, squad limits, the transfer market—and his own future. It was a mix of realism, irritation, and loyalty that paints a clear picture of where Lazio stand right now.
Frustration on and off the pitch
“The players are understandably frustrated,” Sarri admitted. “And I am too, especially with some refereeing decisions. At my age, I thought I had seen everything in football—but some things still manage to surprise me.”
Despite the irritation, Sarri was clear about priorities. Complaining won’t change outcomes.
“We can’t influence certain episodes, so there’s no point wasting energy. We need to focus on ourselves and improve technically, in quality, and above all in finishing. Even tonight, we created a lot.”
It’s a recurring theme of Lazio’s season: chances produced, but not always converted.
Guendouzi and the market reality
Sarri also addressed the departure of Matteo Guendouzi, confirming how painful—but inevitable—the decision was.
“I was convinced Guendouzi was one of the seven or eight players to build the future around,” Sarri said. “But when offers of that size arrive, for a club like ours it becomes difficult to keep certain profiles. I understand that.”
It was a candid acknowledgment of Lazio’s economic reality: ambition must coexist with sustainability.
Ratkov: a club-driven signing
On new arrival Ratkov, Sarri struck a cautious tone.
“I don’t know him yet. I’ll need time to observe him, understand his strengths, weaknesses, and how to integrate him. Probably the club followed him more closely than I did.”

Sarri’s future: “I gave my word”

“At the start of the season I said I would stay here at all costs and endure everything. More has happened than I imagined,” he admitted. “What hurts me most is thinking about our wonderful fans. It pains me to know how hard it will be to give them the satisfaction they deserve.”
And yet, his conclusion was firm.
“Am I staying? I gave my word to the Lazio people—so yes, I think I’ll stay. The transfer window isn’t over yet, and I believe the club can still intervene in an important way.”
