Silvio Baldini begins his tenure as Italy head coach with a victory as Francesco Pio Esposito’s second-half header secures a narrow win in Luxembourg in a match dominated by young talent and international debuts.
Italy national football team opened a new era under Silvio Baldini with a 1-0 victory over Luxembourg national football team at the Stade de Luxembourg.
With much of the squad built around players from Italy’s Under-21 setup, the match marked the beginning of a fresh project focused on youth and long-term development. Baldini’s side delivered an encouraging performance and deservedly claimed victory thanks to a goal from rising star Francesco Pio Esposito.
The opening stages reflected the occasion, as several debutants appeared understandably nervous. Italy controlled possession but struggled to create clear opportunities against Luxembourg’s compact defensive structure.
The first meaningful chance arrived midway through the first half when Lipani delivered a low cross that Esposito cleverly attempted to flick toward goal, only to see the effort drift wide. The Inter striker remained at the center of Italy’s best attacking moves and soon set up Pisilli for another opportunity that failed to trouble goalkeeper Anthony Moris.
Italy’s biggest chance before halftime came through Koleosho, who timed his run perfectly and found himself in a promising position inside the area, but his weak finish was comfortably saved by Moris.
The breakthrough finally arrived four minutes into the second half. Pisilli’s corner found Esposito attacking the near post, and the striker powered a brilliant header beyond Moris to score the first goal of Baldini’s tenure and give the Azzurri a deserved lead.
Italy continued to push forward after taking the advantage. Pisilli nearly doubled the lead shortly afterward, striking the post with what looked like a certain goal, while substitute Alessandro Fini impressed during his cameo and came close to scoring after a chaotic sequence inside the Luxembourg penalty area.
Luxembourg attempted to mount pressure late in the game, but Italy’s central defensive pairing of Chiarodia and Comuzzo remained composed throughout, ensuring Gianluigi Donnarumma enjoyed one of the quietest evenings of his international career.
For Baldini, the result provides an encouraging foundation and a confidence boost ahead of the next stage of his project, with several young players delivering performances that suggest a bright future for the Azzurri.
