Bologna Turn to Domenico Tedesco as New Head Coach

The Rossoblù have officially named the former Belgium and Fenerbahçe manager as Vincenzo Italiano’s successor, handing him a contract through 2028 as the club prepares for a new chapter.

Bologna FC 1909 have officially unveiled Domenico Tedesco as their new head coach, ending weeks of speculation over who would replace Vincenzo Italiano on the Rossoblù bench.

The appointment marks Tedesco’s first experience managing in Serie A despite a coaching résumé that already includes high-profile jobs across Germany, Russia, Belgium, Turkey, and European competition.

Bologna’s Official Announcement

In a statement released by the club, Bologna confirmed that Tedesco has signed a two-year contract running until June 30, 2028, with an option for an additional season.

Born in Rossano, Calabria, but raised in Germany, Tedesco has built a reputation as one of Europe’s most modern and tactically flexible coaches. His career path has taken him from youth coaching roles at Stuttgart and Hoffenheim to senior management positions with several major clubs.

A Career Built Across Europe

Before arriving in Bologna, Tedesco most recently managed Fenerbahçe SK, where he added another trophy to his collection by winning the Turkish Super Cup in 2025.

His previous stops include successful spells with FC Schalke 04, RB Leipzig, FC Spartak Moscow, and the Belgium National Football Team.

Among his career achievements are a second-place finish and a fourth-place finish in the Bundesliga, a runner-up finish in the Russian Premier League, qualification for the knockout stages of the European Championship with Belgium, and victory in the 2021-22 German Cup with Leipzig.

Tedesco also guided Leipzig to the Europa League semifinals and has accumulated extensive experience in both the Champions League and Europa League.

A Long-Term Target Finally Arrives

The appointment is not a sudden decision.

Bologna sporting director Giovanni Sartori had already considered Tedesco two years ago following the departure of Thiago Motta.

At the time, Sartori and technical director Marco Di Vaio held exploratory discussions with both Tedesco and Francesco Farioli. Tedesco, however, declined the opportunity because he was committed to finishing his project with Belgium.

That decision eventually led Bologna to appoint Italiano, who guided the club through one of the most successful periods in recent history.

Now, with Italiano gone, Bologna have returned to a coach they have admired for years.

A New Era Begins

Tedesco arrives with the challenge of maintaining Bologna’s upward trajectory while introducing his own tactical identity.

Known for his aggressive pressing, tactical adaptability, and emphasis on structured attacking football, he inherits a squad that has grown accustomed to competing at the top end of Serie A and on the European stage.

The appointment represents a significant statement of intent from Bologna. Rather than choosing a less experienced domestic option, the club has entrusted its future to a coach with international pedigree and a proven record of success across multiple leagues.

The next challenge begins now: turning that experience into results in Italy’s top flight.
