Juventus manager reflects on the 1–0 defeat in Sardinia, criticising missed details, poor decisions on set pieces, and a lack of ruthlessness in key moments.
Luciano Spalletti struck a resigned but honest tone after Juventus’ painful 1–0 defeat away to Cagliari, a result that brought the Bianconeri’s positive run to an abrupt halt. Speaking after the match, decided by Luca Mazzitelli’s goal, the Juve coach admitted that some games simply turn against you — but also made it clear that his team must take responsibility for the details.
“It had to go this way,” Spalletti said. “Cagliari deserved it because they fought for every ball, stayed compact, and tried to break forward when they could. We weren’t ruthless enough. There are matches where things don’t fall your way, and the less anger you carry with you, the freer you are for the next one.”
Despite the fatalistic opening, Spalletti did not shy away from criticism, particularly regarding the impact of substitutes Francisco Conceição and Edon Zhegrova.
“They have the qualities to operate in tight spaces, but they got carried away by the tempo and lost clarity,” he explained. “Both of them dropped too deep, away from the danger zone near the box. That forced Kalulu and Kelly to stretch wide, and we lost our structure. In that sense, there are things they need to do better in terms of roles and positioning.”
Another key moment that frustrated the Juventus coach was the foul that led to Cagliari’s decisive free kick.
“There was no need to concede that free kick,” Spalletti said, referring to the challenge by Kelly. “It was still a duel, the opponent was in front of him. Instead, we grab the shirt, give them a set piece, and suddenly the ball ends up in our penalty area. From there, they score and gain confidence.”
Still, Spalletti tried to shift the focus forward rather than dwell on the disappointment.
“There’s no point crying over what’s happened,” he said. “The players are all disappointed, of course. But our duty, given the role we have, is to be demanding with ourselves and to squeeze every possible advantage out of a match. One episode can change everything.”
The Juve boss also pointed out that luck was not on his side, citing several moments that could have altered the outcome.
“Yildiz was unlucky in two or three situations,” Spalletti added. “Overall, I saw four or five episodes where things just went against us. When that happens, it becomes harder to analyse everything calmly.”
Juventus now look ahead to their next fixture, knowing that the margin for error is shrinking. For Spalletti, the message is clear: more aggression, more precision, and sharper decision-making will be required if Juve are to respond immediately.
