Portugal 0-1 Spain: Merino Ends Ronaldo’s World Cup Dream and Sends La Roja to the Quarterfinals

Spain survives a tense Iberian knockout clash against Portugal, with Ferran Torres and Mikel Merino combining off the bench to decide the match in stoppage time.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s final World Cup ends in Dallas. Spain moves on.

In one of the most anticipated matches of the Round of 16, La Roja defeated Portugal 1-0 in a tight, tactical and emotionally loaded Iberian showdown that felt like an early final. The match was balanced for almost the entire night, but Mikel Merino’s stoppage-time goal sent Spain into the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals and eliminated Roberto Martínez’s Portugal.

For Portugal, it is the end of an era. Ronaldo, playing what is expected to be his last World Cup, never truly found the night he was looking for. He was not served consistently by his teammates, but he also struggled to create danger on his own, forcing a few attempts without ever really unsettling Spain’s defensive structure.

Spain had the first major opportunity of the match in the eighth minute. Dani Olmo produced a brilliant pass to release Mikel Oyarzabal one-on-one against Diogo Costa, but the Real Sociedad forward dragged his left-footed shot wide. It would remain Spain’s clearest chance for most of the match.

From there, the game settled into a tense and controlled rhythm. Portugal defended with discipline, while Spain tried to dominate the ball without finding its usual fluidity. Lamine Yamal, one of the most anticipated players on the field, was kept quiet by Nuno Mendes, who defended aggressively in one-v-one situations and also offered Portugal a threat going forward before being forced off through injury.

That injury was a significant blow for Portugal. Until his substitution, Mendes had been one of the best players on the field, limiting Yamal and even hitting the crossbar in one of Portugal’s most dangerous moments. After his exit, Portugal lost some of its balance and vertical energy.

Both coaches turned to the bench to find the decisive spark. Martínez introduced Rafael Leão, then Bernardo Silva and Francisco Conceição, but Portugal never truly changed the rhythm of the match. Leão tried to stretch Spain with a couple of runs, but his impact remained limited.

Luis de la Fuente’s substitutions proved decisive. Ferran Torres entered with purpose, Fabián Ruiz added control, and Merino brought late box presence and timing. In stoppage time, Spain finally found the play it had been chasing all night.

Ferran Torres delivered the key pass, sliding a precise ball into Merino’s path. The Arsenal midfielder attacked the space and finished with his left foot past Diogo Costa to make it 1-0 in the 91st minute.

Portugal had no real answer. Spain had not produced its most spectacular performance, but it showed the patience, structure and depth required to survive a major knockout match.

Yamal was contained. Oyarzabal missed his early chance. But Spain’s bench changed the game, and Merino delivered the moment that decided the night.

For Portugal, the disappointment is enormous. For Ronaldo, the final image is not one of celebration, but of an era closing without one last defining World Cup moment.

For Spain, the dream continues.
