Juventus FC is already facing internal disagreements over one of the biggest unresolved questions of its summer: what to do with Douglas Luiz.
The Brazilian midfielder, returning from a disappointing loan spell back in England, has become a symbolic case inside the club as coach Luciano Spalletti and CEO Damien Comolli reportedly hold very different visions for his future.
According to reports in Italy, Juventus owner John Elkann recently asked the club’s leadership to reduce tensions and work together more cohesively after several difficult weeks at Continassa.
But Douglas Luiz is already testing that fragile balance.
Spalletti reportedly sees an opportunity.
Comolli sees a financial problem.
The 28-year-old midfielder spent the second half of last season back at Aston Villa FC after an earlier temporary spell with Nottingham Forest FC.
Despite helping Aston Villa win the Europa League, the Premier League club is not expected to trigger the €25 million purchase option negotiated in January.
That leaves Juventus searching for a solution.
Spalletti, however, is intrigued by the possibility of reinventing Douglas Luiz as the deep-lying playmaker around whom his possession system could revolve.
The Juventus coach reportedly believes the Brazilian still possesses the technical quality and passing intelligence to become a “Pizarro-type” or “Lobotka-type” regista — references to David Pizarro and Stanislav Lobotka, two midfielders who thrived under Spalletti in previous projects.
Internally, the coach’s reasoning is simple: if Juventus cannot afford elite reinforcements after missing Champions League qualification, then maximizing the value of players already under contract becomes essential.
Spalletti reportedly wants to evaluate Douglas Luiz personally during preseason before making any final decision.
The coach remains convinced the “real” Douglas Luiz is not the version Juventus saw during the disastrous 2024-25 campaign, when injuries, inconsistency, and tactical confusion limited the midfielder to just 27 appearances and zero goals under both Thiago Motta and Igor Tudor.
Comolli, though, is far less sentimental.
The French executive reportedly considers Douglas Luiz one of the most expensive remnants of the previous sporting management led by Cristiano Giuntoli and would prefer to sell him before preseason begins in July.
Juventus’ financial situation has become significantly more complicated after missing out on the Champions League, costing the club an estimated €55-60 million in revenue.
That reality is already shaping the transfer strategy.
Apart from Kenan Yıldız — considered untouchable by Elkann after signing his extension through 2030 — almost every player in the squad is theoretically available for the right offer.
Douglas Luiz sits near the top of that list.
Comolli reportedly does not expect Aston Villa to match the €50 million Juventus originally paid two years ago in a deal involving cash plus the transfers of Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea.
Still, the Juventus CEO hopes to avoid a major financial loss while generating immediate liquidity through a permanent sale this summer.
That could place Giorgio Chiellini in a key mediating role once again.
The former captain has increasingly become the bridge between Juventus’ sporting and executive leadership, and sources suggest he may now be tasked with helping find a compromise between Spalletti’s tactical vision and Comolli’s financial pragmatism.
Because for Juventus this summer, Douglas Luiz is no longer just a midfielder.
He is becoming a test case for how the club itself intends to move forward.
