Unai Emery adds another Europa League title to his legendary résumé as Aston Villa dominate Freiburg in the final with a commanding performance in Istanbul.
SC Freiburg were overwhelmed by Aston Villa FC in the Europa League Final, as Unai Emery’s side cruised to a 3-0 victory and lifted the trophy in emphatic fashion in Istanbul.
The English club controlled the match from start to finish and effectively decided the final before halftime with goals from Youri Tielemans and Emiliano Buendia. Morgan Rogers then added a third shortly after the break to complete a dominant display and seal another European triumph for Emery.
The Spanish manager further cemented his remarkable legacy in the competition, winning the Europa League for the fifth time with three different clubs after previous successes with Sevilla and Villarreal.
Freiburg, led by Italian international Vincenzo Grifo, managed to stay organized for much of the opening half but struggled to contain Aston Villa’s attacking quality. The German side created little offensively, with Junior Adamu and Matanovic unable to threaten consistently in the final third.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 41st minute when Tielemans finished clinically to give Aston Villa the lead. Deep into first-half stoppage time, Buendia doubled the advantage and left Freiburg facing an uphill battle entering the second half.
Any hopes of a comeback disappeared in the 58th minute. Rogers capped off an outstanding performance by sliding home Villa’s third goal, sparking celebrations among the traveling supporters and effectively ending the contest.
Aston Villa comfortably managed the remainder of the match, with Emery even introducing former Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz late in the game as the Villans closed in on European glory.
