Champions League qualification is within reach, but Aurelio De Laurentiis and Antonio Conte are preparing for a decisive conversation that could reshape Napoli’s future strategy.
Napoli are on the verge of returning to the UEFA Champions League, but the biggest decision facing the club may arrive after qualification is secured. Monday’s clash against Bologna FC 1909 could mathematically seal a top-four finish, yet the spotlight in Naples is already shifting toward Antonio Conte and whether his project still aligns with club president Aurelio De Laurentiis.
Conte remains under contract through 2027, but uncertainty surrounding the Italian coach has continued to grow over the last few weeks. Internal discussions, combined with recent comments from De Laurentiis during a trip to California, have fueled speculation that the partnership may not last beyond this season despite the progress made on the field.
The upcoming meeting between the two figures is expected to focus less on results and more on philosophy. Napoli’s ownership is preparing for a new financial cycle built around sustainability, younger talent, and a reduced wage structure. Whether Conte is willing to embrace that approach could determine everything.
Napoli invested heavily last summer after the disastrous 10th-place finish that kept the club out of Europe. Bringing in Conte represented a major reset, but it also came at a considerable cost for a self-sustaining organization that traditionally avoids excessive spending. Now, with Champions League revenue likely returning, the club wants to rebalance the books rather than continue escalating expenses.
Part of that plan involves lowering the overall wage bill significantly over the next year while shifting transfer strategy toward emerging players with long-term resale value. Napoli want to rediscover the model that once brought stars like Victor Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to southern Italy before they became global names.
That vision may not perfectly fit Conte’s win-now mentality.
Several veteran players could leave this summer as Napoli reshape the roster. Romelu Lukaku, who still carries a massive salary commitment, is among the names being discussed, while defender Juan Jesus is also expected to depart. Midfielder André-Frank Zambo Anguissa could follow depending on how negotiations develop.
At the same time, the club must evaluate expensive investments that have yet to deliver the expected impact. Napoli spent heavily on players like Lorenzo Lucca and Noa Lang, who returned from loan spells but have struggled to justify their combined valuation so far.
If Conte decides to walk away — or if the club concludes the visions are too far apart — one familiar name is already hovering over the conversation: Maurizio Sarri.
The former Napoli coach remains deeply admired by the fanbase and would represent both continuity and nostalgia. However, Sarri is currently tied to S.S. Lazio through 2028, meaning any move would depend on negotiations with president Claudio Lotito.
The uncertainty surrounding Napoli is also part of a much larger coaching carousel developing across Italian soccer. Massimiliano Allegri, Vincenzo Italiano, and several other high-profile coaches could all be involved in a chain reaction that reshapes multiple clubs this summer, including AC Milan.
For now, though, Napoli’s attention remains fixed on one thing: finishing the job, returning to Europe’s elite competition, and then deciding whether Conte is still the right man to lead the next chapter.
