Zappacosta’s first-half goal proves decisive as Atalanta edge Verona and stay in the race for fourth place on Serie A Matchday 30.
Atalanta secured a narrow but important 1–0 victory over Hellas Verona, maintaining their push for a Champions League spot while condemning the visitors to another difficult outing near the bottom of the table.
The decisive moment came in the first half through Davide Zappacosta, whose goal ensured Gian Piero Palladino’s side climbed to 50 points and remained firmly in contention for a top-four finish.
Before kickoff, Atalanta fans paid tribute to Marten de Roon, who became the club’s all-time appearance leader with 436 matches, surpassing club legend Gianpaolo Bellini.
On the pitch, the pattern of the game was clear from the outset. Atalanta controlled possession and dictated the tempo, while Verona sat deep and looked to exploit counterattacks.
The hosts created early chances, with Nikola Krstovic testing Lorenzo Montipò with a header, while a crucial intervention from Jean-Victor Akpa Akpro denied Ederson a clear scoring opportunity.
Atalanta finally broke through in the 37th minute. Zappacosta found space on the left side of the box and fired a precise left-footed shot into the far corner, beating Montipò and giving the hosts a deserved lead.
In the second half, Atalanta continued to create chances but failed to extend their advantage. Krstovic came close again, striking the crossbar with an attempted lob, while Carnesecchi was called into action to deny Bowie with an important save.
Verona had their best opportunity late in the match. Gift Orban found himself in a promising position but squandered the chance, first hesitating and then firing a weak shot that was comfortably saved by Carnesecchi.
Despite the missed chances, Atalanta managed the closing stages well and held on for a valuable three points.
The win keeps Atalanta firmly in the hunt for a Champions League spot, while Verona remain stuck in the relegation zone with time running out to turn their season around.
