Atalanta coach reflects on heavy Champions League loss but defends his tactical approach
Raffaele Palladino admitted he was deeply impressed by the quality of FC Bayern Munich after Atalanta BC suffered a heavy 6–1 defeat in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 matchup.
Despite the painful scoreline, Palladino defended his tactical choices and insisted he would not change his approach.
“I would play the match the same way again,” he said after the game. “If we’re here — fighting in the league and in the Coppa Italia semifinals — it’s because of this mentality.”
“At Times They Were Unplayable”
The Atalanta coach was quick to congratulate Bayern for their dominant performance.
“First of all, we have to congratulate them,” Palladino said. “They’re an incredibly strong team and at times they were simply unplayable.”
He reserved special praise for the Bayern players’ technical level and speed of execution.
“I’ve rarely seen players with this level of quality,” he said. “They always played the ball at the right speed and onto the correct foot.”
According to Palladino, that technical precision made it extremely difficult for Atalanta to recover possession or launch counterattacks.
A Lesson in European Football
Despite the defeat, Palladino framed the match as part of the club’s growth on the European stage.
“This experience helps us grow,” he said. “We’ve reached this stage because of our identity and mentality, and we won’t change that now.”
The Atalanta coach emphasized that his team has already demonstrated resilience throughout the season.
“The players have always reacted after defeats,” he said. “And we will react again starting from the next match.”
Tactical Challenges Against Bayern
Palladino explained that Bayern’s attacking depth and pressing made it almost impossible for Atalanta to execute their usual transitions.
“They have extremely strong players up front and attack the space very well,” he said.
Atalanta struggled to build counterattacks because Bayern immediately pressed to win the ball back after losing possession.
“Their counter-pressing was very aggressive,” Palladino noted. “Every time we tried to restart, they recovered the ball right away.”
The Italian side was also dealing with several important absences in attack, limiting their offensive options.
Proud of the Team’s Effort
Despite the heavy loss, Palladino praised his players for continuing to fight until the final whistle.
“The team worked hard and honored the shirt,” he said.
He also thanked the Atalanta supporters who continued to encourage the team throughout the match.
“The best player tonight was the crowd,” Palladino said. “They supported us until the end even with this result.”
Looking Ahead
Atalanta now face a difficult task in the second leg, but Palladino believes the experience can still be valuable.
“We accept the result,” he said. “In football you either win or you learn.”
For the Italian club, the focus will now shift back to domestic competitions — and to responding immediately after one of their toughest nights in Europe.
