Mission accomplished for Bologna FC 1909, who defeated SK Brann 1-0 to secure their place in the Europa League Round of 16.
A first Italian goal from João Mário proved decisive, but qualification was also built on resilience, defensive heroics, and a key red card that shifted the balance of the tie.
Early Pressure from Brann
The Norwegian side started aggressively and nearly stunned the home crowd inside three minutes, but Łukasz Skorupski produced a superb save to deny Thorsteinsson.
Moments later, Holm appeared to have beaten Skorupski with a delicate lob—only for Remo Freuler to clear dramatically off the line.
The turning point arrived in the 37th minute when Sorensen lunged recklessly into Freuler. Referee Bastien showed a straight red card, forcing Brann to play nearly an hour with ten men.
João Mário Breaks Through
After halftime, Bologna increased the tempo. The numerical advantage began to show, and in the 56th minute the breakthrough arrived.
Rowe’s cross was partially cleared but fell kindly to João Mário, who controlled and finished clinically with his right foot to make it 1-0.
From there, Bologna managed the game with composure. Dominguez struck the post in stoppage time, but the single goal was enough.
