Juventus collapse after halftime as Galatasaray dominate the second half and take a commanding first-leg advantage
Juventus’ Champions League night in Istanbul turns into a nightmare. After a strong first half that ended with the Italians leading 2-1, the Bianconeri completely fell apart after the break, conceding four goals as Galatasaray stormed to a 5-2 victory over Juventus in the first leg of the Champions League playoff.
A brace from Teun Koopmeiners gave Juventus control at halftime, but a disastrous second half — marked by defensive errors and the red card shown to Juan Cabal — opened the door for a relentless Galatasaray comeback, led by Noa Lang and the unstoppable Barış Alper Yılmaz.
First Half: Koopmeiners Shines, Juventus Lead
The match began at a frantic pace, with both teams pressing high and attacking aggressively. Galatasaray struck first in the 15th minute when Gabriel Sara capitalized on a loose ball at the edge of the box and fired past Michele Di Gregorio.
Juventus responded immediately. Andrea Cambiaso surged forward and delivered a cross that resulted in a rebound finished by Koopmeiners for the 1-1 equalizer. The Dutch midfielder was in vintage form, and in the 32nd minute he struck again, smashing a powerful left-footed shot into the top corner after a counterattack initiated by Weston McKennie. Juventus went into halftime up 2-1 and seemingly in control.
Second Half Collapse
Everything changed after the interval. Luciano Spalletti replaced the booked Cambiaso with Cabal, a decision that proved costly. In the 49th minute, Cabal was beaten by Yılmaz, Di Gregorio parried the initial shot, and Noa Lang was first to react to make it 2-2.
Galatasaray kept pushing, and Cabal again struggled defensively, conceding a free kick that led to the 60th-minute goal: Davinson Sánchez headed home Gabriel Sara’s delivery to make it 3-2. The defender’s nightmare continued as he picked up a second yellow card in the 67th minute, leaving Juventus down to ten men.
With Juventus disorganized, Galatasaray took full advantage. A risky buildup error in the 75th minute allowed Victor Osimhen to steal possession and set up Lang for his second goal of the night. The rout was completed in the 86th minute when Sacha Boey finished from close range to seal a stunning 5-2 win.
Juventus now face an uphill battle in the return leg, needing a near-perfect performance to overturn a three-goal deficit.
