Conte: “A Crazy Season. We Did Everything Ourselves Against Genoa. McTominay? We Hope for the Best” (VIDEO)

Antonio Conte looked almost as drained as if Napoli had dropped points, despite the dramatic late win at Marassi. Given the constant setbacks that continue to complicate Napoli’s campaign, it’s easy to understand why. That’s also why the victory over Genoa carries extra weight.

“Beyond courage and heart, this is a game where we basically did everything ourselves,” Conte told DAZN after the match. “Genoa’s goals came from our own mistakes, and reacting the way we did isn’t something everyone can manage. We even went down to ten men, yet we still created a clear chance with Gutiérrez. This team never gives up, even in difficult moments.”

Conte highlighted how every week seems to bring a new problem.

“Something happens every Sunday. I wanted to see how the team would respond without Di Lorenzo, who represents Napoli with his leadership, and the answer was outstanding. The players are putting their hearts on the line. I’m proud of them. We deserved to win, but credit to Genoa and to De Rossi. Playing at Marassi is never easy, and they won’t have problems for the rest of the season.”

A season to reflect on

According to Conte, Napoli’s current situation should force deeper reflections looking ahead.

“I always say we must leave the pitch with our heads held high, making the fans proud and defending the badge. But let’s be honest: it’s hard. Players make the difference in winning, and when you don’t have them available, there’s not much to say. This has been a crazy season.”

Conte pointed to the squad’s limitations, worsened by a long list of injuries:

“If we’re intelligent, we all need to reflect on squad size, the transfer strategy, and the youth system we can’t really rely on. We have a small roster, made even smaller by long-term injuries to Lukaku, De Bruyne, Anguissa, Gilmour, Di Lorenzo, Neres — and we still don’t know about McTominay. What these guys are doing is extraordinary.”

Opportunity amid adversity

The injury crisis has also opened doors for others.

“Players like Vergara have grown a lot and are taking their chances. Ambrosino had also improved, but chose to go and play in Serie B. Now we just have to deal with it, because on Tuesday we have the Coppa Italia. We want to keep going, even though Como will be fresh and it won’t be easy.”

On Scott McTominay, Conte offered an update:

“He’s been dealing with this issue since the start of the season. The tendon area gets inflamed and causes pain. He can play, but not at full capacity. He could have continued, but I prefer a player at 100% rather than taking unnecessary risks. He’s fundamental for us — we hope to have him back.”
