Roma’s attacking troubles continue, and the latest news is a heavy setback: Artem Dovbyk is set to undergo surgery and will be out for approximately two months. The development shakes not only Roma’s short-term plans but also has direct consequences on their approach to the transfer market.
The Ukrainian striker’s injury has proven more serious than initially expected. Dovbyk will travel to Finland to undergo surgery for a myotendinous lesion in his left thigh, sustained during Roma’s match against Lecce on January 6. After further medical evaluations, both the club and the player decided to abandon conservative treatment in favor of surgical intervention. The operation will be performed by Professor Lasse Lempainen, a renowned specialist in tendon injuries who also operated on Lorenzo Pellegrini last May.
The expected recovery time is around two months, with the most likely return date set for early April.
From a market perspective, this changes everything. Any potential January move is now off the table. Dovbyk had attracted interest from Fenerbahce and several other European clubs, but the injury forces him to remain in Rome during his rehabilitation period.
For Gian Piero Gasperini, it means losing one of his central forwards at a crucial stage of the season. Sporting director Frederic Massara will now have to carefully assess the situation and decide whether Roma need to step back into the market to reinforce their attacking department in the winter window.
