Napoli Rethink Their Striker Plans as Lukaku Setback Forces a New Strategy

With Romelu Lukaku sidelined and no room for new spending, Antonio Conte must decide whether Lorenzo Lucca can finally step up during a decisive stretch of the season

Napoli’s season has reached a delicate crossroads. The injury to Romelu Lukaku, ruled out for at least three weeks, has forced the club to reassess plans that until recently seemed settled. Unlike last summer, when financial flexibility allowed Napoli to react decisively on the market, this time the margin for maneuver is almost nonexistent.

Defending the Serie A title, chasing Champions League qualification, and staying alive in the Coppa Italia leave no room for half-measures. Yet Napoli are facing exactly that scenario: one reliable striker, mounting physical demands, and a forward whose role remains an open question.

At the moment, Rasmus Højlund is the only true center-forward available to Antonio Conte. The Danish striker has been asked to shoulder an enormous workload, rarely missing minutes across league and cup competitions. Asking him to lead the line alone through a brutal run of nine matches before February 1 would be a serious risk, both tactically and physically.

This is where Lorenzo Lucca re-enters the conversation. The former Udinese forward arrived in Naples amid high expectations, but his impact has been limited. In the last nine matches, Lucca has played just 41 minutes in total — scattered appearances that have offered little chance to build rhythm or confidence. His statistics tell a story that needs no commentary, and for now he remains more a question mark than a solution.

Financial constraints complicate matters further. Napoli signed Lucca on loan for €9 million, with a €26 million obligation to buy set for July. His €2 million salary also represents the maximum wage space available should the club attempt a swap deal. Any incoming striker would have to come at zero net cost, making the market extremely narrow. Potential moves involving players like Artem Dovbyk or a transfer to the Premier League have faded, leaving Napoli with few realistic alternatives.

Internally, the club is well aware of the danger. A packed schedule will decide a significant portion of Napoli’s season, from the Scudetto race to their Champions League ambitions. Conte has experimented with solutions — including using David Neres as a false nine — but those remain temporary fixes rather than long-term answers.

Lukaku is injured, Lucca is still searching for form, and Napoli cannot afford mistakes. The coming weeks may finally offer Lucca the opportunity he has been waiting for — not just to justify his price tag, but to keep Napoli competitive when it matters most.
