Lazio Set for January Shake-Up: Castellanos Funds the Market, But More Exits Loom

Taty Castellanos’ move to West Ham unlocks Lazio’s transfer window, as Claudio Lotito and Maurizio Sarri prepare for a major squad overhaul

The January transfer window is finally opening doors for Lazio, and president Claudio Lotito is ready to act decisively. After a summer marked by a frozen market and zero signings, the Biancocelesti are now set to become one of Serie A’s most active clubs — starting with the sale of Valentín Castellanos.

Castellanos’ transfer to West Ham United for a total package of around €30 million represents the first major step in a broader revolution. Once Lazio forward the agreed percentage to New York City FC, the remaining funds will immediately fuel Sarri’s rebuilding plans.

Sarri Ready to Redesign Lazio

Head coach Maurizio Sarri is expected to reshape his starting XI significantly. Castellanos’ departure may not be the only high-profile exit, with multiple areas of the squad under review as Lazio aim to regain competitiveness both domestically and in Europe.

One of the most intriguing names on the incoming list is Lorenzo Insigne. Currently a free agent after his time in MLS, Insigne has long been admired by Sarri. Talks are at an advanced stage, and the coach envisions a dual role for him: deputy to Mattia Zaccagni on the wing and, at times, a false nine in the mold of Dries Mertens during Sarri’s Napoli years.

A New No. 9 and Other Targets

Despite Insigne’s versatility, Lazio are still expected to sign a traditional striker. The leading candidate is Andrea Pinamonti, with Sassuolo open to negotiations if a strong offer arrives. Lotito’s excellent relationship with CEO Giovanni Carnevali could ease the deal, potentially involving defender Kamenović as part of the package.

On the outgoing side, Nuno Tavares is increasingly likely to leave after losing his place to Luca Pellegrini. Interest from Al-Ittihad has been persistent, and a sale would generate further funds.

Looking Ahead: June or Now?

Lazio are also planning ahead. An agreement is already in place to sign Alfonso Pedraza from Villarreal on a free transfer in June. However, Tavares’ exit could prompt Lotito to accelerate the move and bring Pedraza to Rome immediately.

Midfield reinforcements are also being explored, with possible swap deals involving Torino and Atalanta. There is even speculation of talks with AC Milan over Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who has reportedly expressed openness to working under Sarri as a mezzala once again.

A Defining Window

Castellanos’ sale is just the beginning. Lazio’s January window promises multiple ins and outs, with Lotito aiming to restore balance and ambition after months of forced inactivity. For Sarri, it’s finally time to build — not from scratch, but with renewed flexibility and purpose.
