Juventus Push for Emiliano Martínez as Aston Villa Open Door to Discount

The World Cup-winning goalkeeper remains Juventus’ top target, while Guglielmo Vicario has emerged as the club’s main alternative if negotiations with Aston Villa stall.

Juventus continue to prioritize the signing of Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez as they reshape their squad for the new season, with negotiations reportedly gaining momentum.

According to reports in Italy, the Argentine goalkeeper remains head coach Luciano Spalletti’s preferred choice to become the new No. 1 in Turin, thanks to the leadership, personality and winning mentality he would bring to the dressing room.

While an agreement with Martínez on personal terms is believed to be largely in place, the biggest obstacle remains Aston Villa.

The Premier League club initially valued the 34-year-old goalkeeper at around €10 million plus bonuses, a package that could approach €15 million. Juventus, however, are determined to keep the operation financially sustainable and have made it clear they are unwilling to meet those demands.

Instead, the Bianconeri are targeting a transfer fee closer to €5 million, potentially supplemented by performance-related bonuses linked to individual achievements and team success.

There are signs of progress.

Reports suggest Aston Villa have shown a willingness to reduce their asking price, although the discount currently being discussed is still considered insufficient by Juventus executives.

Chief executive Giovanni Carnevali continues to work behind the scenes to narrow the gap between the two clubs, maintaining regular contact with Aston Villa while also relying on Martínez’s reported desire to move to Turin.

The Argentine international is said to be open to joining Juventus even without UEFA Champions League football, with a three-year contract worth approximately €5 million net per season already discussed between the parties.

Martínez is expected to focus on his future after completing Argentina’s World Cup campaign.

If negotiations fail, Juventus already have alternatives lined up.

The leading backup option is Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, who is reportedly expected to leave North London following changes to the Spurs goalkeeping department. Vicario would welcome a return to Serie A and sees Juventus as an attractive destination as he looks to relaunch his career after a difficult season in England.

His salary, estimated at around €3 million per year, would make him a less expensive option from a wage perspective, although Tottenham are reportedly seeking approximately €15 million for his transfer. Napoli are also believed to be monitoring the Italian international.

Another name admired by Juventus is Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi, but the Bergamo club currently considers him unavailable for transfer.

Meanwhile, Torino’s Vanja Milinković-Savić remains another profile under evaluation. Spalletti reportedly appreciates the Serbian goalkeeper’s distribution and comfort in possession, qualities considered increasingly important in the modern game.

For now, though, Juventus remain fully focused on one objective.

If Aston Villa continue to soften their position, Emiliano Martínez could soon become the experienced leader Juventus believe is needed to begin a new chapter between the posts.
