France 3-1 Senegal: Mbappé Takes Over as Les Bleus Pull Away Late

Senegal frustrates France for an hour, but Kylian Mbappé’s brilliance proves decisive as Didier Deschamps’ side opens its World Cup campaign with a victory.

France survived an uncomfortable opening hour against Senegal before Kylian Mbappé reminded the world why he remains football’s most devastating player, scoring twice in a 3-1 victory in the opening match of Group I at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

For long stretches, Senegal looked capable of producing another famous result against Les Bleus, twenty-four years after their historic upset in 2002. But once Mbappé found his rhythm, the contest changed completely.

Didier Deschamps deployed an attacking quartet featuring Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé, Michael Olise and Désiré Doué, yet France struggled badly during the opening period. Passes were misplaced, combinations broke down, and even Mbappé endured an unusually sloppy first half.

One careless turnover from the French captain nearly proved costly. Nicolas Jackson burst forward on the counterattack and struck the post, while Ismaïla Sarr squandered another excellent opportunity just before halftime, failing to capitalize on a dangerous delivery inside the penalty area.

Senegal’s defensive organization was impressive. Kalidou Koulibaly dominated physically, Édouard Mendy made several comfortable saves, and Sadio Mané sacrificed much of his attacking game to support his teammates defensively.

Everything changed after the break.

France returned from halftime with far greater intensity, and Mbappé suddenly looked like a different player. He began attacking defenders with confidence, repeatedly forcing Senegal’s back line into retreat.

After having appeals for a penalty waved away, the Paris-born superstar finally broke the deadlock in the 66th minute. The goal was his 13th in just 15 World Cup appearances, drawing him level with Olivier Giroud atop France’s all-time scoring charts.

As Senegal tired, the spaces behind the defense grew larger. Substitute Bradley Barcola exploited them perfectly in the 82nd minute, finishing a move initiated by Adrien Rabiot to seemingly put the match beyond doubt.

Yet the drama was not over.

Deep into stoppage time, 18-year-old PSG prospect Mbaye reduced the deficit to 2-1, taking advantage of an uncertain intervention by Mike Maignan and briefly giving Senegal hope.

The excitement lasted only a minute.

Mbappé immediately responded, racing forward and clinically scoring his second goal of the evening in the 96th minute. The strike moved him ahead of Giroud as France’s all-time leading scorer and brought his World Cup tally to an astonishing 14 goals in just 15 matches.

The victory places France atop Group I after Matchday 1, while Senegal is left to regret a series of missed opportunities that could have dramatically altered the outcome.
