Seven saves against European champions Spain, the Man of the Match award, and millions of new followers overnight: the fairy-tale journey of Josimar “Vozinha” Évora Dias is already one of the defining stories of the 2026 World Cup.
Every World Cup produces unforgettable stories, and Vozinha’s is already destined to become one of the most memorable tales of the 2026 tournament. At 40 years old, after spending most of his career far from the spotlight of elite football, Cape Verde’s goalkeeper has suddenly become a global sensation thanks to his extraordinary performance in a stunning 0-0 draw against reigning European champions Spain.
Facing one of the favorites to lift the trophy, Josimar José Évora Dias—better known as Vozinha—delivered a remarkable display between the posts. Seven crucial saves, several of them denying close-range efforts from Mikel Oyarzabal, Ferran Torres and Aymeric Laporte, helped Cape Verde secure a historic point in the nation’s first-ever FIFA World Cup match.
At the final whistle, the Cape Verdean goalkeeper was named Man of the Match. Holding the award in his hands, he was overcome with emotion and shared a heartfelt story that quickly resonated with fans around the world.
“I grew up with my grandparents, and I wish they could have been here with me, but they passed away,” he said in an interview with a Brazilian television network. “My mother couldn’t come either. We had problems with the visa, and the trip was too expensive. We simply couldn’t organize everything in time.”
His popularity exploded almost instantly on social media. Before the World Cup, his Instagram account had around 50,000 followers. within a few hours of the match against Spain, followers quickly rose to over 6 million, and at the time of writing had even doubled that number, turning the Cape Verdean goalkeeper into one of the breakout stars of the tournament. Vozinha himself was stunned by the sudden fame.
“This is crazy. You guys are insane,” he said with a smile, struggling to comprehend the attention he had received overnight.

His personal story is one of perseverance and sacrifice. Born on June 3, 1986, in Mindelo, on the island of São Vicente, Vozinha was largely raised by his grandparents while his father served in the military and his mother worked tirelessly to support the family. It was his grandparents who gave him the nickname “Vozinha,” a term of affection reflecting the deep bond he shared with them growing up.
Vozinha’s football journey has been anything but conventional. He began his career with Batuque, the club from his hometown, before moving to Mindelense and later to Angola. In 2015, he made his first move to Europe, signing for Moldovan side Zimbru Chișinău. He later played for Portuguese club Gil Vicente, Cyprus’ AEL Limassol, Slovakian outfit Trenčín, and eventually returned to Portugal with Chaves, where he currently plays in the second division.
Away from the field, Vozinha has also continued working as a dentist, balancing his profession with his football career for years. That unique combination only adds to the appeal of his remarkable story.
The night in Atlanta transformed a goalkeeper previously known only to followers of Europe’s smaller leagues into a symbol of determination and resilience. For Cape Verde, the draw against Spain was a historic achievement. For Vozinha, it was the culmination of a lifetime spent chasing a dream without ever giving up.
And with the 2026 World Cup only just underway, the Cape Verdean goalkeeper has already emerged as one of the tournament’s most compelling characters.
