Fiorentina Set for Fabio Grosso Era as Squad Overhaul Begins

The former Sassuolo manager is expected to take charge this week, with major changes looming in Florence. Several high-profile departures are anticipated, while Fiorentina have already identified key targets to rebuild the squad.

A new chapter is about to begin for ACF Fiorentina.

Following the end of his successful spell with US Sassuolo, Fabio Grosso is expected to officially become Fiorentina’s new head coach in the coming days. Once the separation from Sassuolo is finalized, attention will immediately shift toward planning a significant summer rebuild.

Club executives are scheduled to meet ownership in New York next week, with sporting director Daniele Pradè and senior management expected to begin shaping the squad around Grosso’s vision.

Gudmundsson and Dodô Headed for the Exit

Among the first major decisions will be the futures of Albert Gudmundsson and Dodô.

Both players are reportedly nearing the end of their Fiorentina careers after two seasons in Florence. The club is hoping to generate between €30 and €35 million from potential sales while also reducing salary commitments as part of a broader restructuring effort.

Dodô has already attracted interest from several Serie A clubs, including Napoli, while Gudmundsson remains a player with strong appeal across both Italy and abroad.

Uncertainty Around Other Key Players

The summer could bring even more changes.

Veteran goalkeeper David de Gea, wing-back Robin Gosens, and striker Moise Kean all face uncertain futures.

Their situations will depend not only on incoming offers but also on Grosso’s evaluation of the current squad. With Fiorentina looking to manage their wage structure carefully, significant proposals could prompt difficult decisions.

One player whose position appears secure is Nicolò Fagioli. The midfielder is viewed as one of the foundations of the club’s future project and is expected to play a central role under the new coach.

Grosso Wants Familiar Faces

As Fiorentina begin to reshape the roster, Grosso is already identifying players he trusts.

One of the strongest names linked to the club is Cristian Volpato, who worked under Grosso at Sassuolo and remains highly regarded by the incoming manager. Fiorentina see him as a creative option capable of fitting several attacking roles.

Another player expected to remain high on the club’s wishlist is Kristian Thorstvedt. Fiorentina pursued the Norwegian midfielder aggressively during previous transfer windows, and Grosso’s arrival could strengthen the club’s determination to finally complete the move.

Midfield Reinforcements a Priority

The midfield is expected to be one of the busiest areas of the squad this summer.

After investing heavily in Giovanni Fabbian and Marco Brescianini, Fiorentina hope Grosso can help unlock their full potential.

At the same time, the club is exploring additional options, including Sven Mijnans of AZ Alkmaar. The 26-year-old Dutch midfielder has emerged as a serious target as Fiorentina search for greater creativity and technical quality in the center of the pitch.

Alongside Fagioli, club captain Rolando Mandragora and young talent Cher Ndour are considered important pieces of the long-term project.

Competition for Aranda

In attack, Fiorentina are also monitoring Tomás Aranda, although the race for the highly rated prospect is expected to be extremely competitive.

The club’s strategy appears clear: lower the average wage bill, create financial flexibility through player sales, and give Grosso a younger, more dynamic squad capable of competing for European qualification.

With managerial changes nearly complete and transfer discussions already underway, Fiorentina may soon become one of Serie A’s most active clubs during the summer window.
