Champions League failure leaves coach at risk as angry fans target Ibrahimovic outside San Siro
Massimiliano Allegri admitted AC Milan must now make a complete assessment of the season after missing out on Champions League qualification in dramatic fashion.
The Rossoneri’s defeat against Cagliari Calcio has left Allegri’s future hanging in the balance, with owner Gerry Cardinale expected to make major decisions in the coming days.
Speaking after the match, Allegri did not hide his disappointment.
“We defended very badly as a team,” the Milan coach said.
“I have nothing to reproach the players for.”
“I am disappointed and angry”
Despite growing speculation over a possible dismissal, Allegri gave no indication he intends to resign.
“Right now I’m disappointed and angry, especially after we had managed to put everything back in place with the win against Genoa,” he explained.
“With great bitterness, we have to accept it.”
The coach insisted the season cannot be judged solely on the final result, even if missing the Champions League heavily impacts the club’s evaluation.
“The entire season has to be evaluated as a whole,” Allegri said.
“The players gave everything.”
At the same time, the former Juventus coach openly accepted responsibility for key mistakes during the campaign.
“We made mistakes. I made mistakes during these six defeats.”
“We must evaluate everything with lucidity”
Allegri stressed the importance of remaining calm before making definitive judgments about the future.
“At the end of the season, the final result obviously pushes evaluations in one direction,” he admitted.
“But we must be very lucid when making those evaluations.”
The Milan manager was especially frustrated because a draw would have been enough to secure Champions League football.
“We were too passive on the first and second goals. That had never happened before.”
Ibrahimovic escorted through angry crowd
While the players avoided speaking to reporters after the match, tension around the club exploded outside San Siro.
Zlatan Ibrahimović left the stadium alongside Cardinale and was escorted to the parking area amid heavy insults from furious supporters.
The defeat has intensified pressure not only on Allegri but also on the entire Milan hierarchy, including RedBird management and the club’s executives.
Giorgio Furlani and Massimo Calvelli reportedly remained inside San Siro long after the final whistle as the atmosphere around the club turned increasingly tense.
Now all eyes are on Cardinale and RedBird, who must decide whether Allegri is still the right man to lead Milan forward after one of the most painful collapses of the season.
