Giménez Reflects on Tough Milan Season: “We Were First When I Was Starting”

AC Milan striker opens up about injury struggles, lost momentum, and his long-term dream of returning to Cruz Azul

For Santiago Giménez, this season has been defined by frustration — and what might have been.

The AC Milan forward began the campaign as a key piece in the Rossoneri attack, helping the team climb to the top of the Serie A standings. But just as expectations were rising, everything changed.

A Promising Start Cut Short

“When I look back, it’s been a complicated year,” Giménez said in an interview with Record Mexico. “I started the season with big expectations. I was playing the first ten games as a starter, and the team was in first place.”

It was the kind of start every striker dreams of — confidence, rhythm, and a team performing at the highest level.

Then came the setback.

An injury forced Giménez to the sidelines for over four months, halting both his personal momentum and his role within the team.

A Long Road Back

The recovery process was anything but easy.

“There was bad news about the surgery,” he admitted. “But I try not to look at the past. I focus on the present to build the future.”

Now back in training, Giménez says he’s feeling good again — though not quite at full capacity yet.

“I’m training again and working to get back to 100%.”

For Milan, his return could still prove crucial as the season enters its final stretch, especially for a squad that has struggled to maintain consistency in attack.

Looking Ahead — and Back Home

Despite his commitment to Milan and European football, Giménez hasn’t forgotten where it all began.

The 24-year-old revealed a strong emotional connection to Cruz Azul, the club where he made his name.

“It’s something inside me,” he said. “I’d love to return one day. I hope it happens many years from now, because I enjoy being in Europe and competing at the highest level. But Cruz Azul is a club that marked an era for me — being part of that team was something beautiful.”

A Season of What-Ifs

Giménez’s words highlight a familiar story in football — how quickly a season can change.

From leading the line for a first-place Milan side to months on the sidelines, his campaign has been a mix of promise and disappointment.

Now, the focus shifts to finishing strong — and rediscovering the form that once made him central to Milan’s ambitions.
