Italiano Takes Aim at Referee After Bologna–Roma: “N’Dicka Was Pulling Shirts All Game” (VIDEO)

Bologna coach praises his team’s performance but questions officiating in Europa League draw

Vincenzo Italiano was pleased with Bologna FC 1909’s performance in the 1–1 draw against AS Roma in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League Round of 16 — but he also had a few words about the referee.

The Rossoblù coach praised his players after the match at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara, though he admitted some frustration over missed opportunities and certain officiating decisions.

“We Played a Great Game”

Bologna took the lead through Federico Bernardeschi before Lorenzo Pellegrini equalized for Roma in the second half.

Italiano believes his team delivered one of their best performances of the season.

“We played very well and had a great match,” he said. “As I told Bernardeschi, if we had played like this more often in the league, things might be different.”

The draw leaves the tie wide open ahead of the return leg in Rome.

“This result gives us hope,” Italiano added. “Maybe it’s 51–49 for Roma because of the 60,000 fans we’ll face there, but we’ll try to do everything possible.”

Criticism of the Referee

Despite the positive performance, Italiano hinted at frustration with the officiating, particularly regarding Roma defender Evan Ndicka.

“The referee was a bit too permissive with N’Dicka,” he said. “He allowed him to pull shirts.”

Italiano also questioned a potential foul involving Donyell Malen and Remo Freuler.

“On Malen’s touch on Freuler, maybe a whistle could have come,” he added. “But in Europe they often interpret those situations differently.”

Respect for Gasperini

Despite the competitive tension of the match, Italiano made clear he has great respect for Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini.

“I admire him a lot for the courage he gives his teams,” Italiano said.

It’s the same attitude he hopes his Bologna squad can continue to show in the decisive second leg.

Looking for Consistency

Italiano admitted he has mixed feelings after the match.

“I’m torn,” he said. “On one side there’s pride for this performance, on the other there’s regret for matches where we didn’t play like this.”

The coach pointed out that Bologna’s intensity, focus, and ball movement at home were particularly impressive.

“If we keep this level,” he concluded, “we can show what we’re really capable of.”
