Spain 0-0 Cape Verde: World Cup Shock as Debutants Hold European Champions

Cape Verde earns a historic point in its first-ever World Cup match while Spain wastes a series of chances in a frustrating Group H opener.

One of the biggest surprises of the opening round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup arrived in Atlanta, where reigning European champions Spain were held to a stunning 0-0 draw by tournament debutants Cape Verde.

Luis de la Fuente’s side entered the match as overwhelming favorites against a nation making its first appearance on football’s biggest stage. Instead, Spain produced a flat and uninspired performance, while Cape Verde celebrated a historic result that could prove crucial in the race for qualification from Group H.

From the opening whistle, it became clear that the match would not follow the expected script. Cape Verde defended with discipline, remained compact between the lines, and showed no signs of being intimidated by one of the tournament favorites.

Spain controlled possession throughout the first half but struggled to break down Bubista’s well-organized side. The best opportunities arrived late in the opening period.

Ferran Torres came closest to breaking the deadlock when his effort struck the crossbar after a well-worked Spanish attack. Moments later, the Barcelona forward was denied again by veteran goalkeeper Vozinha, whose experience and composure proved invaluable throughout the evening.

The second half offered little improvement from Spain. Pedri and Marc Cucurella remained among the few players capable of creating danger, but the European champions lacked sharpness in the final third. Mikel Oyarzabal was largely anonymous, while Torres continued to struggle in front of goal.

Recognizing the need for creativity, De la Fuente introduced teenage sensation Lamine Yamal with twenty minutes remaining. The Barcelona star immediately injected energy into Spain’s attack, producing several dangerous runs and combinations that briefly lifted the tempo.

Despite Yamal’s influence, Spain never found the decisive breakthrough.

In fact, the biggest chance of the final minutes belonged to Cape Verde. Deep into the second half, defender Diney Borges rose above the Spanish defense and met a cross with a powerful header. The effort was directed on target, but Unai Simón was able to gather comfortably and preserve the clean sheet.

The final whistle sparked celebrations among the Cape Verde players and supporters, who secured the first World Cup point in the nation’s history. For Spain, meanwhile, the result will be viewed as a major disappointment and an early warning that Group H may prove more complicated than expected.

With Saudi Arabia and Uruguay still to play, the draw leaves the group wide open after Matchday 1.
