Roma Set Sights on Mason Greenwood as Gasperini Begins Squad Revolution

The Giallorossi are preparing a major move for the Marseille forward, while Matías Soulé could be sacrificed to fund Roma’s new Champions League project under Gian Piero Gasperini.

Roma’s return to the Champions League could trigger one of the club’s most ambitious transfer windows in recent years, and the name now at the top of the wishlist is Mason Greenwood.

The English forward has emerged as Gian Piero Gasperini’s preferred attacking target as the veteran Italian coach begins shaping his vision for Roma’s next era. After scoring 48 goals across the last two seasons between Spain and France, Greenwood has rebuilt his reputation on the field and is once again attracting attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Roma, however, believe they have a real chance.

The Giallorossi see Greenwood as the centerpiece of a new-look attack capable of competing at Champions League level immediately. Internally, there is growing excitement about the possibility of pairing the former Manchester United talent with Donyell Malen, who became one of Roma’s most influential players during the second half of last season.

The deal would not come cheap. Olympique Marseille reportedly value Greenwood at around €50 million after investing €25 million to sign him permanently. Manchester United are also entitled to a significant percentage of any future sale, which complicates negotiations further. Still, Roma hope Marseille’s need to balance finances could lower the final asking price.

Relations between the two clubs are said to be strong following previous business dealings, and Roma’s incoming sporting structure could soon accelerate talks. The expected arrival of sporting director Tony D’Amico may play an important role in pushing negotiations forward.

According to reports in Italy, Greenwood’s representatives have already shown openness to a move to the Italian capital and were waiting for Roma’s Champions League qualification before seriously discussing the project. Gasperini himself is reportedly eager to speak directly with the player to explain how he would fit into Roma’s tactical system.

One potential consequence of the pursuit could be the departure of Matías Soulé.

The Argentine attacking midfielder remains highly regarded at the club, but Roma may need a major sale before June 30 to help close out financial obligations linked to UEFA settlement agreements. Aston Villa are currently among the clubs monitoring Soulé, and Roma are believed to value him between €35 million and €40 million.

From a tactical standpoint, Gasperini reportedly envisions a fluid, aggressive frontline built around Malen and Greenwood. The Marseille star’s rare ambidexterity is viewed as one of his greatest strengths. During the season, Greenwood registered virtually identical shooting numbers with both feet, making him capable of playing on either wing or drifting centrally depending on the situation.

Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær once famously described Greenwood by saying: “He doesn’t have a weak foot — he has two strong feet.”

That versatility is one of the reasons Roma view him as a unique profile on the market.

Despite continued debate surrounding the off-field allegations that were formally dropped in 2023, Greenwood has successfully rebuilt his career through strong performances first at Getafe and later at Marseille. His resurgence has also attracted interest from clubs including Atlético Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.

If Roma fail to land Greenwood, West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville remains one of the primary alternatives. The Dutch international, recently called up for the World Cup, would also offer familiarity with Malen after their time together with the Netherlands national team.

For now, though, Greenwood is clearly the dream target as Roma prepare to enter a new Champions League chapter under Gasperini.
