Lazio Officially Parts Ways With Maurizio Sarri as Gattuso Nears Appointment

The Biancocelesti confirmed the mutual termination of Sarri’s contract after just one season back in Rome.

SS Lazio and Maurizio Sarri have officially gone their separate ways.

The Roman club announced Tuesday that it has formally deposited the mutual termination of Sarri’s contract with Serie A, bringing an end to the coach’s second spell at Formello after only one season.

Lazio accompanied the announcement with an emotional tribute video on social media featuring highlights from Sarri’s time at the club alongside the message: “Thank you for everything, Commander.”

In its official statement, Lazio confirmed the agreement with the Tuscan coach and his staff.

“The club acknowledges the conclusion of the professional relationship and wishes the coach and his collaborators the best for the continuation of their careers,” the statement read.

Sarri’s exit had become increasingly expected over recent days after growing reports linking him to Atalanta BC, where he is now believed to be very close to becoming the successor to Gian Piero Gasperini.

Meanwhile, Lazio already appears to have identified its replacement.

According to multiple reports in Italy, Gennaro Gattuso is set to take over the Biancocelesti bench and begin a new era under president Claudio Lotito.

Sarri’s second Lazio chapter ultimately failed to replicate the heights of his first spell.

After initially arriving in Rome in 2021, the former SSC Napoli and Chelsea FC manager led Lazio to a remarkable second-place Serie A finish before resigning midway through the 2023-24 campaign.

Lotito brought him back last summer hoping to restore stability and identity to the project.

Instead, the season ended in disappointment.

Lazio finished ninth in Serie A and also lost the Coppa Italia final against FC Internazionale Milano, falling short of expectations both domestically and in Europe.

Still, Sarri leaves behind a strong connection with a large portion of the Lazio fanbase, many of whom continued to appreciate both his football philosophy and his personality despite the team’s inconsistent results.

His emotional embrace with Pedro Rodríguez after the veteran’s farewell match against Pisa SC now appears to have been one of the final symbolic moments of his Lazio tenure.

Now, both sides move forward.

Sarri prepares for what could become another major challenge with Atalanta, while Lazio turns the page once again in search of stability after another managerial change.
