Bologna and Vincenzo Italiano Officially Part Ways

The coach leaves after two successful seasons and a Coppa Italia triumph, with Eusebio Di Francesco, Raffaele Palladino, and Stefano Pioli emerging as the leading candidates to replace him.

Bologna’s successful era under Vincenzo Italiano has officially come to an end.

The club confirmed on Wednesday that Italiano and Bologna have mutually agreed to terminate the coach’s contract, closing a memorable two-year chapter that brought the Rossoblù back into the spotlight of Italian football and delivered a historic Coppa Italia title.

The decision followed a lengthy meeting at Bologna’s Casteldebole training center involving club executives, ownership representatives, and legal teams from both sides. Italiano, whose contract originally ran until 2027, informed the club that he considered his cycle in Bologna complete regardless of any future opportunities elsewhere.

In an official statement, Bologna thanked the coach for his commitment and highlighted the Coppa Italia victory as one of the defining moments in recent club history.

“Vincenzo Italiano communicated to the club that he considers his experience at Bologna concluded after two seasons marked by excellent results, regardless of any future professional prospects,” the statement read. “The club thanks Vincenzo for the passion and dedication shown during his time here, which will forever remain part of Bologna’s history.”

Italiano leaves after transforming Bologna into one of Serie A’s most entertaining and competitive teams. His aggressive playing style, tactical flexibility, and ability to maximize young talent helped elevate the club both domestically and in Europe.

The timing of the departure has only intensified speculation surrounding Napoli’s managerial search. Italiano is reportedly one of the top names being considered by the Partenopei alongside Massimiliano Allegri, and reports in Italy suggest recent meetings between the coach and Aurelio De Laurentiis’ FilmAuro group created tension inside Bologna’s management.

Sporting director Marco Di Vaio admitted earlier this week that the club had not been informed about those discussions in advance — something that reportedly disappointed Bologna’s hierarchy even if they understood the realities of modern football.

Now attention immediately shifts toward Italiano’s replacement.

Several candidates are already being evaluated, with Eusebio Di Francesco currently among the favorites. The former Roma coach is appreciated for his attacking philosophy and experience rebuilding ambitious projects.

Raffaele Palladino is also strongly in the mix. The young Italian manager is expected to part ways with Atalanta soon and remains highly regarded after his recent work in Serie A. Bologna see him as a profile capable of continuing the proactive football identity established under Italiano.

Another experienced option is Stefano Pioli, who could offer stability and international pedigree after his successful years with Milan. Meanwhile, Daniele De Rossi — another name linked to the job in recent weeks — now appears increasingly likely to remain at Genoa.

Replacing Italiano will not be easy.

Beyond the results, the coach rebuilt enthusiasm around Bologna and helped re-establish the club as a serious force in Italian football. The next appointment will be crucial if the RossoblĂą want to maintain momentum and continue competing for European places in Serie A.
