Just hours after officially saying goodbye to Antonio Conte, Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has intensified efforts to bring Massimiliano Allegri to Naples as the face of the club’s next project.
And following the dramatic collapse at AC Milan, the timing may finally be perfect.
After Milan’s failure to qualify for the Champions League, owner Gerry Cardinale officially dismissed Allegri as part of the massive restructuring announced Monday evening.
That decision immediately reopened the possibility of a move to Napoli — a scenario De Laurentiis has quietly explored for more than a year.
The Napoli president has long admired Allegri and already considered him a serious option last summer in case Conte had departed earlier than expected.
Now, with Conte officially gone and Milan having cut ties with Allegri, the path suddenly appears much clearer.
According to reports in Italy, Napoli executives are already working actively behind the scenes to accelerate negotiations.
Several factors are helping push the situation forward.
Allegri reportedly maintains an excellent relationship with De Laurentiis, while his long-standing friendship with Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna is also believed to be playing an important role in the discussions.
Sources close to the situation suggest the coach is now far more open to the idea than in previous years, particularly after the difficult final months of his Milan experience.
Despite the disastrous end to the Rossoneri season, De Laurentiis has not changed his opinion of Allegri’s profile or pedigree.
Internally, Napoli still views him as one of the few Italian coaches capable of immediately maintaining the club’s ambitions at the highest level both domestically and in Europe.
The squad Allegri would inherit is also considered one of the strongest foundations currently available in Serie A.
Napoli plans to reinforce the roster this summer but believes the core is already capable of competing for the Scudetto again while making a deep Champions League run.
That combination reportedly appeals strongly to Allegri.
After a turbulent and ultimately disappointing spell at Milan, Napoli could represent what many inside Italian football view as his final opportunity to lead a genuine top-tier project built to win immediately.
For De Laurentiis, meanwhile, the calculation is equally clear.
Replacing Conte was always going to require a coach with authority, experience, and the ability to manage enormous pressure inside one of Italy’s most emotionally demanding soccer environments.
Few names offer that combination more naturally than Allegri.
The club has not yet made an official announcement, and negotiations are still ongoing, but momentum is clearly building.
Napoli has already publicly thanked Conte on social media.
Now the club is trying to turn the page as quickly as possible.
