Modric pulls the strings for Milan, Maignan keeps Roma at bay as the Rossoneri settle for a draw on Matchday 22
Roma and Milan played out a 1-1 draw at the Stadio Olimpico in a result that ultimately suited neither side, as Inter took advantage at the top of the table. Milan struck first through a De Winter header, but Lorenzo Pellegrini came off the bench to convert a crucial penalty and restore parity in a high-intensity Serie A Matchday 22 clash.
The opening stages were played at a furious tempo, but it was Roma who dominated the first half. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side turned the match into a personal duel with Mike Maignan, firing 11 shots before the break and forcing the French goalkeeper into five saves to keep Milan level.
Both teams continued to attack after halftime, though Roma were dealt a blow when Manu Koné was forced off with a muscle injury while tracking back on Adrien Rabiot. Despite Roma’s pressure, it was Milan who broke the deadlock just past the hour mark. From a corner kick, Luka Modric delivered a perfectly weighted ball into the box, allowing De Winter to rise above the defense and head past Svilar.
With the lead secured, Milan dropped deep and looked set to take all three points. Roma, however, found a lifeline when Bartesaghi was penalized for a handball in the box. Pellegrini, introduced moments earlier, stepped up and calmly converted the penalty to make it 1-1, capping an excellent impact off the bench.
The final minutes saw Roma push hard for a winner, but Milan’s defensive block held firm, and the match ended with the points shared. The draw leaves Roma frustrated after failing to capitalize on Napoli’s defeat, while Milan slip five points behind Inter in the Scudetto race.
