No rush at Milanello, but the Rossoneri are scouting profiles for the back line: Coppola preferred, Senesi and Gila monitored
Milan’s January window is moving with caution rather than urgency. With the Scudetto race still wide open, Massimiliano Allegri has asked for an additional defensive option—but only if it truly raises the level of the squad. The club’s message is clear: no panic buys, just the right fit.
The early moves have already reassured the coach. The arrival of Niclas Füllkrug has added depth up front following Giménez’s injury, while the imminent contract renewal of Mike Maignan secures stability between the posts. Now attention turns to the back line.
Coppola the favorite, but Brighton hold firm
At the top of Milan’s shortlist is Diego Coppola, a 22-year-old center-back who previously impressed in Serie A with Verona and is now at Brighton & Hove Albion. Coppola has struggled for minutes in the Premier League—just five appearances so far—and would welcome a return to Italy.
Milan see him as a profile that could satisfy both technical and financial criteria. The obstacle, however, is Brighton’s stance: the English club are not currently open to a loan with option to buy, the formula preferred by the Rossoneri. Talks remain exploratory, with Milan unwilling to rush.
Senesi and Gila: different paths, same monitoring
As alternatives, Milan are tracking two very different situations.
The first involves Marcos Senesi, a regular starter at Bournemouth. Senesi’s contract expires in June 2026, making him a name to watch rather than an immediate January target. Juventus are also monitoring the situation, suggesting a potential summer tug-of-war.
Another name on the radar is Mario Gila of Lazio. The 25-year-old is considered more of an end-of-season option. Lazio, already reshaping their squad after the departures of Guendouzi and Castellanos, are reluctant to lose one of their defensive leaders mid-cycle, making a winter move unlikely.
Doors closed elsewhere
Several other avenues have effectively been shut. Federico Gatti is not for sale, with Juventus unwilling to strengthen a direct Serie A rival. A reunion with Kim Min-jae, now at Bayern Munich, is also unrealistic due to his hefty salary—well above €7 million per season.
Internal solutions buy time
Milan’s calm approach is also supported by internal options. Davide Bartesaghi has impressed with his versatility and reliability, showing he can operate not only as a wing-back but also as a left-sided center-back in a back three. Allegri trusts him as a viable rotation piece, reducing the urgency to act.
Waiting for the right move
For now, Milan are observing, gathering information, and keeping lines open. Coppola remains the preferred target, but only under the right conditions. With the title race still alive, the Rossoneri want reinforcements that strengthen—not disrupt—the balance Allegri has built.
January is long, and Milan are in no hurry to solve their defensive rebus.
