Roma on the Attack: Raspadori Almost Done, Zirkzee Deal Gains Momentum

After unlocking the Raspadori move, Roma push hard for Zirkzee: loan with €38m option and a long-term contract ready

Roma’s January market has suddenly shifted into high gear. With Giacomo Raspadori on the verge of becoming a new Roma player, the Giallorossi are now accelerating for Joshua Zirkzee, a move that could radically reshape Gian Piero Gasperini’s attacking options for the second half of the season.

The mood at Trigoria has changed noticeably. After days of tension and uncertainty, confidence is back—and the Friedkin ownership has made it clear they intend to deliver.

Raspadori first, then Zirkzee

Roma are finalizing the last details for Raspadori following a late financial push that convinced both the player and Atletico Madrid. But that will not be the end of Roma’s January business.

Sporting director Frederic Massara has resumed strong contact with Zirkzee’s entourage, confident that the framework agreed weeks ago with Manchester United is still valid.

That agreement is based on:

  • Loan deal
  • Option to buy worth around €38 million, linked to Champions League qualification

Zirkzee’s stance: Italy over uncertainty

Despite the dismissal of Rúben Amorim, Zirkzee continues to push for a return to Serie A. The Dutch striker believes Roma offer him continuity, responsibility, and a central role—key factors with the 2026 World Cup in mind.

Zirkzee was again left on the bench in United’s 2–2 draw against Burnley, reinforcing the sense that his status at Old Trafford remains fragile. Roma, by contrast, are ready to bet on him long-term.

Contract until 2030 ready

Roma’s commitment is reflected in the contract proposal already on the table:

  • Deal until 2030
  • Salary of around €3.5 million net per season

A clear signal that Zirkzee would not be a short-term gamble, but a cornerstone of Gasperini’s project.

United’s hesitation and the AFCON factor

The main obstacle remains Manchester United’s internal chaos. The uncertainty surrounding the appointment of a new head coach has frozen several decisions, including Zirkzee’s future.

United had previously indicated they would wait for the return of Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo from the Africa Cup of Nations before authorizing departures.

Ironically, AFCON itself could help Roma. In tonight’s quarter-final, Neil El Aynaoui will face Cameroon. Either outcome benefits the Giallorossi:

  • Cameroon win → El Aynaoui returns sooner
  • Morocco win → United may accelerate Zirkzee’s exit

Gasperini asks for more

During the latest summit at Trigoria, Gasperini reiterated his needs beyond Raspadori and Zirkzee:

  • One more attacking winger, possibly a prospect
  • An additional midfielder

Roma are listening—and acting.

A turning point in Roma’s season?

If Roma manage to close both Raspadori and Zirkzee, January could mark a decisive turning point. After weeks of stagnation, the Giallorossi are now playing aggressively, trying to transform frustration into ambition.

The pieces are moving. Now it’s about timing.
