Genoa–Fiorentina 2–2: Colombo and Piccoli Break Their Droughts, Marcandalli and Ranieri Struggle

A lively 2–2 draw at the Ferraris marks the first match of the De Rossi and Vanoli eras. Four goals, plenty of drama, and mistakes on both sides keep Genoa and Fiorentina stuck near the bottom of the table.

It’s one point apiece for Genoa and Fiorentina in their new beginnings under interim coaches Giacomazzi and Vanoli. The match offered goals, excitement, and no shortage of defensive lapses, with both teams alternating between brilliance and confusion.

The fireworks started early. Genoa went ahead thanks to a familiar combination: another header from Ostigard on a pinpoint set-piece cross by Martin — his second goal in just a few days.

Minutes later, a handball by Colombo inside the box gifted Fiorentina a penalty, calmly converted by Gudmundsson to make it 1–1.

The second half opened with another defensive blunder, this time from Fiorentina: captain Ranieri mishit a clearance and handled the ball in the area. Colombo stepped up from the spot, but De Gea denied him with a fine save.

The Viola then turned the game around on 57 minutes with the first Serie A goal from Piccoli, who combined strength and precision to beat Leali from close range. But their joy was short-lived: only three minutes later, De Gea spilled a routine ball in the box, and Colombo, from the ground, tucked it into the empty net for the 2–2 equalizer — his first goal of the season.

In the closing stages, Genoa came closer to finding a winner, but the Viola held firm to escape with a draw.

Player Ratings

Genoa
Colombo (6): a rollercoaster evening. Concedes a penalty, misses another, but redeems himself with a scrappy goal that could kickstart his confidence. Constantly involved and battling.
Martin (6.5): back to being a weapon on set pieces; his deliveries were once again decisive.
Marcandalli (5): his mistake allowed Piccoli to score, spoiling an otherwise solid performance.

Piccoli (7): scored his first Serie A goal and was the most dangerous Viola player throughout the second half. Nearly bagged a second with a curling effort that forced a fine save from Leali.

De Gea (6.5): saved Colombo’s penalty brilliantly but then committed a costly mistake for the 2–2.
