DERBY, moore than a game. Rambo-Okan and the Legend of the Istanbul Derby

Soccer fans, you may know it—or maybe you don’t—but it’s worth saying anyway: derbies take away sleep. In Italy, they cost Romans and Genoese more than a few nights’ rest and maybe even a bit of health. The Derby della Capitale and the Derby della Lanterna are the most intense, the ones that split cities in two. But they’re not alone.

Across Europe, there are other fiery rivalries—like Red Star vs. Partizan in Belgrade. And then there’s the derby, the most passionate of them all: Fenerbahçe vs. Galatasaray, the intercontinental clash of Istanbul. Intercontinental because Fenerbahçe was founded on the Asian side of the city, while Galatasaray was born in the European district of Galata. Two continents, two cultures, two worlds colliding on the same pitch.

It all began on April 24, 1996, at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium, Fenerbahçe’s home ground. It was the second leg of the Turkish Cup final. The match ended 1-1—a result that crowned the Galatasaray side as champions. Their coach, former Sampdoria player Graeme Souness, decided to celebrate in a way no one would forget: he planted a massive Galatasaray flag right in the middle of Fenerbahçe’s field.

For Fenerbahçe fans, that was an unforgivable insult. And six years later, revenge arrived.

Enter Okan Güler, known to everyone as Rambo-Okan. The night before the derby, he snuck into the rival stadium and hid behind the advertising boards at pitchside—for eighteen hours. A small man, but with a giant passion for his club.

When the teams finally walked out onto the field, Rambo-Okan burst out of hiding. With a huge Fenerbahçe flag in his right hand and a knife in his left, he ran to the center of the pitch and planted his team’s flag in Galatasaray’s home turf. Revenge complete.

Security quickly tackled him, but as they dragged him away, he celebrated wildly—his mission accomplished. For Fenerbahçe fans, Rambo-Okan became a legend.

Because that’s what a derby is all about: passion, rivalry, and moments that become folklore.
