On Day 22 of the Club World Cup, Doué and Dembélé down Bayern, while Gonzalo Garcia leads the Blancos. Injuries, red cards, and drama in the second day of the quarterfinals

The 2025 Club World Cup caught fire with two all-European quarterfinals packed with Champions League-level quality, last-minute twists, and moments of brilliance. Paris Saint-Germain booked their spot in the semifinals with a 2-0 win over Bayern Munich, setting up a mouthwatering clash with Real Madrid, who edged Borussia Dortmund 3-2 in a rollercoaster of a game.
East Rutherford will host what already feels like a premature final between PSG and Real, while Fluminense and Chelsea will battle in the other semifinal.

PSG 2-0 Bayern Munich
In the first quarterfinal of Day 22, PSG confirmed their great form by defeating Bayern with two late goals. Desiré Doué—named Man of the Match—and Ousmane Dembélé were the difference-makers in Atlanta. But the scoreline doesn’t tell the whole story: it was a fierce and evenly matched contest, with Donnarumma and Neuer both starring and two Bayern goals (Upamecano and Kane) disallowed.

PSG even finished with nine men after red cards to Pacho and Lucas Hernandez, but struck at exactly the right moments. In the 78th minute, Doué broke the deadlock with a precise left-footed strike after Joao Neves dispossessed Kane high up the pitch. Then, in stoppage time—after yet another disallowed Kane goal—Dembélé sealed it on a Hakimi assist.

One of the most dramatic episodes of the tournament so far was the devastating injury to Jamal Musiala, who left the pitch on a stretcher after a collision with Donnarumma. German reports confirm a fibula fracture and ligament damage, with the young star expected to miss 4–5 months.

Post-match reactions:
Luis Enrique: “We suffered, but we stayed united until the end.”
Vincent Kompany: “Musiala’s injury was a massive blow. We hope he makes a full recovery soon.”
Gianluigi Donnarumma: “All my thoughts and prayers go out to you, Jamal.”
Manuel Neuer: “Donnarumma took too much of a risk on Musiala. He should’ve avoided that challenge.”

Real Madrid 3-2 Borussia Dortmund
In East Rutherford, Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund delivered a breathtaking quarterfinal. The Blancos dominated for 90 minutes but nearly threw it all away in a frantic stoppage time. It ended 3-2 for Xabi Alonso’s men, who now face PSG in the semis.

The first half was all Madrid. Gonzalo Garcia opened the scoring in the 9th minute with his fourth goal of the tournament, maintaining his spot as the competition’s top scorer. Ten minutes later, Fran Garcia doubled the lead with a thunderous strike assisted by Alexander-Arnold. Dortmund were gasping for air, but found a late spark just as the game seemed lost.

After several wasted chances by Madrid, the closing minutes were wild: Beier pulled one back for Dortmund in the 92nd minute, then Mbappé—once again coming off the bench—scored to make it 3-1 at 94’. Guirassy converted a penalty at 97’ after Huijsen was sent off for the foul. That left Real down to ten men and clinging to a one-goal lead during a marathon of stoppage time. In the 99th minute, Courtois saved Madrid’s tournament with a miraculous stop on Sabitzer.

Post-match reactions:
Xabi Alonso: “We were perfect for 90 minutes, but made things complicated at the end.”
Thibaut Courtois: “I just did my job, but we can’t afford these kinds of blackouts.”
Gonzalo Garcia: “Top scorer? It means nothing if we don’t win the title.”
Niko Kovac: “It’s a shame—our late comeback was incredible. We walk away with heads held high.”
