Jhon Arias scored the decisive goal, Luis Suárez made an immediate impact off the bench, and Colombia’s defense shut down Ghana to book a last-16 meeting with Switzerland.
Colombia is the final team to reach the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Cafeteros defeated Ghana 1-0 thanks to an early goal from Jhon Arias, securing a fully deserved win and setting up a last-16 clash with Switzerland. The scoreline was narrow, but the performance confirmed Colombia as one of the most solid and balanced teams in the tournament.
If there is one concern for Néstor Lorenzo’s side, it is efficiency. Colombia controlled the match, created far more than Ghana and dominated long stretches, but still had to settle for a one-goal margin. Against stronger opponents, that lack of ruthlessness could become dangerous.
The key moment came early, and it was connected to an unfortunate injury. Jhon Córdoba was forced off after just eight minutes, with Luis Suárez entering in his place. The change could have disrupted Colombia’s plan, but instead it helped unlock the match.
Only a few minutes later, Suárez provided the assist for Arias, who showed perfect timing and composure to score in the 14th minute. From that point on, Colombia had the match exactly where it wanted it.
Ghana had started with some energy, but after falling behind, Otto Addo’s team slowly disappeared from the game. The Black Stars never found rhythm, never created sustained pressure and failed to produce a real shot on target.
Colombia’s defensive pair of Davinson Sánchez and Jhon Lucumí was outstanding. They controlled Jordan Ayew completely, dominated the physical battle and gave Ghana almost no space through the center. Antoine Semenyo, one of Ghana’s most talented attacking players, looked far from full fitness and never managed to influence the match.
At the other end, Luis Díaz remained active and dangerous, while Arias offered movement and sharpness from midfield. James Rodríguez, however, had a quiet first half and was replaced at the break by Ríos. Colombia still had enough control and structure to keep pushing, but Zigi made several important interventions to prevent a heavier defeat.
Ghana’s goalkeeper was the main reason the score stayed 1-0. Without him, Colombia could have finished the game much earlier. Mensah struggled defensively, Yirenkyi lost Arias on the goal, and Ayew was almost invisible in attack.
For Ghana, the elimination is disappointing and flat. The team exited without ever truly threatening Colombia’s goal and without showing the attacking personality needed in a knockout match.
For Colombia, the mission is complete. The Cafeteros are through, deservedly, and now prepare for Switzerland. They have defensive strength, midfield balance and enough attacking talent to be taken seriously. Now they just need to turn dominance into goals more consistently.
