England’s preparations for Sunday’s FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash against Mexico have taken an unexpected turn after British media highlighted a surprising scientific topic: the potential use of Viagra to help players cope with high altitude.
The match at Mexico City’s historic Estadio Azteca will be played approximately 2,200 meters (7,200 feet) above sea level, creating a significant physiological challenge for players who are not acclimated to such conditions.
According to reports in the United Kingdom, the medication sildenafil—best known by its brand name Viagra—is not prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and has been studied for its potential effects on athletic performance at high altitude.
Scientific research has suggested that sildenafil can reduce pressure in the pulmonary arteries, potentially improving oxygen delivery and helping to lessen symptoms such as fatigue and dizziness that can occur in low-oxygen environments.
However, there is no evidence that England’s players are planning to use the medication.
British newspaper The Sun emphasized that while the scientific studies exist, there are currently no indications that members of Thomas Tuchel’s squad intend to take Viagra before the match.
England will have only two days to adjust to Mexico City’s altitude after leaving their training base in Kansas City, giving the team limited time to acclimatize before facing the host nation in one of the marquee matches of the Round of 16.
Managing fatigue, hydration and recovery is expected to be a major focus for England’s medical and performance staff as they prepare for the demanding conditions.
Whether through traditional acclimatization methods or sports science strategies, England’s biggest challenge may not only be Mexico—but also the altitude itself.
