The first-ever 48-team World Cup has officially entered its knockout phase.
After 12 groups, 72 group-stage matches and a dramatic race for the eight best third-place spots, the Round of 32 is set. The top two teams from each group advanced automatically, while eight third-place teams completed the bracket.
The United States, Mexico, Brazil, Germany, France, Spain, Argentina, England and Portugal are all still alive. But the new format has also delivered fresh stories: Cape Verde will face Argentina, DR Congo will meet England, Bosnia and Herzegovina will challenge the United States, and South Africa will open the knockout stage against Canada.
From here on, there is no more group-stage math. It is win or go home.

The Bracket: A New World Cup Starts Now
The Round of 32 gives the tournament a completely different rhythm. Some teams arrive with momentum, others with questions. Some favorites looked dominant in the group stage, while others survived difficult moments and now have a chance to reset.
Mexico, France and Argentina were perfect in their groups. Brazil, Spain, England, Switzerland, Colombia and the Netherlands also finished first and confirmed their status as major contenders.
But the knockout draw has created several fascinating matchups. Portugal vs Croatia has the feeling of a European heavyweight clash. Netherlands vs Morocco brings together two ambitious teams with attacking quality and tactical personality. USA vs Bosnia and Herzegovina is a major test for the hosts, while Argentina vs Cape Verde places the defending champions against one of the most remarkable stories of the tournament.
How Every Group Finished
Group A: Mexico Perfect, South Africa Through
Mexico dominated Group A with three wins from three matches, finishing with nine points and a plus-six goal difference. The hosts now return to Mexico City for a high-pressure Round of 32 matchup against Ecuador.
South Africa finished second with four points, enough to earn an automatic place in the knockout stage. Their reward is a meeting with Canada in Los Angeles.
South Korea finished third but missed out on one of the best third-place spots, while Czechia ended bottom of the group.

Group B: Switzerland Win It, Bosnia Survive
Switzerland won Group B with seven points, combining defensive control with enough attacking production to finish ahead of Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Canada finished second on four points and will face South Africa in the Round of 32. Bosnia and Herzegovina also advanced as one of the best third-place teams, setting up a huge matchup against the United States in Santa Clara.
Qatar finished bottom and was eliminated.

Group C: Brazil First, Morocco Strong
Brazil finished top of Group C with seven points, ahead of Morocco on goal difference. The Seleção now face Japan in Houston in one of the most technically intriguing matchups of the Round of 32.
Morocco also impressed, finishing unbeaten and earning a knockout match against the Netherlands in Monterrey.
Scotland finished third but did not qualify, while Haiti left the tournament without a point.

Group D: USA Win the Group, Australia and Paraguay Advance
The United States won Group D with six points and now move into the knockout stage with a Round of 32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Australia finished second after a balanced group-stage campaign and will face Egypt in Dallas. Paraguay also qualified as one of the best third-place teams and will meet Germany in Foxborough.
Türkiye finished with three points but was eliminated.

Group E: Germany Top, Ivory Coast and Ecuador Follow
Germany won Group E despite a final-match defeat to Ecuador. Their reward is a Round of 32 match against Paraguay.
Ivory Coast finished second and will face Norway, while Ecuador’s win over Germany was not enough to reach the top two but did secure a place among the best third-place teams. Ecuador now face Mexico at the Estadio Azteca.
Curaçao finished bottom with one point.

Group F: Netherlands First, Japan Second, Sweden Survive
The Netherlands topped Group F with seven points after a strong attacking group stage. Their Round of 32 matchup against Morocco is one of the most attractive fixtures of the knockout opening round.
Japan finished second after a draw with Sweden and will face Brazil. Sweden, meanwhile, advanced as a third-place team but received one of the toughest possible draws: France.
Tunisia finished bottom after three defeats.

Group G: Belgium Edge Egypt, Iran Miss Out
Belgium finished first in Group G with five points, ahead of Egypt on goal difference. The Red Devils now face Senegal in Seattle.
Egypt also went unbeaten and will face Australia in Dallas. Iran finished third with three draws, but it was not enough to qualify after the final third-place rankings were settled. New Zealand finished last.

Group H: Spain First, Cape Verde Make History
Spain won Group H with seven points and will face Austria in Los Angeles.
Cape Verde produced one of the stories of the tournament, finishing second with three draws and securing a historic knockout-stage place. Their reward is massive: a Round of 32 clash with defending champion Argentina in Miami.
Uruguay and Saudi Arabia were eliminated after both finishing on two points.

Group I: France Dominate, Norway and Senegal Advance
France were one of the most convincing teams of the group stage, winning all three matches of the Group I, scoring ten goals and finishing with a plus-eight goal difference.
Norway finished second and will face Ivory Coast in Dallas. Senegal also advanced as a third-place team and now face Belgium in Seattle.
Iraq finished bottom after three defeats.

Group J: Argentina Perfect, Austria and Algeria Through
Argentina finished Group J with nine points and enter the knockout stage with confidence. The defending champions now face Cape Verde in Miami.
Austria finished second and will face Spain, while Algeria qualified as one of the best third-place teams and will meet Switzerland in Vancouver.
Jordan finished bottom after three defeats.

Group K: Colombia First, Portugal Second, DR Congo Advance
Colombia won Group K with seven points after a goalless draw against Portugal. The Colombians now face Ghana in Kansas City.

Uzbekistan finished bottom of the group.

Round of 32 Matchups to Watch
Portugal vs Croatia
A European knockout classic. Portugal bring attacking talent and experience, while Croatia remain one of the most dangerous tournament teams in the world. This is arguably the most balanced tie of the Round of 32.
Netherlands vs Morocco
Two teams with technical quality, pace and personality. The Netherlands topped their group with attacking production, but Morocco went unbeaten and will not fear anyone.
USA vs Bosnia and Herzegovina
The hosts won Group D, but Bosnia and Herzegovina have already shown they can survive difficult moments. For the United States, this is the first true knockout test of the tournament.
Argentina vs Cape Verde
On paper, it is a mismatch. In World Cup terms, it is pure drama. Argentina arrive as defending champions and Group J winners. Cape Verde arrive as one of the most emotional stories of the tournament.
Mexico vs Ecuador
Mexico’s perfect group stage now meets Ecuador’s momentum after a stunning win over Germany. With the match in Mexico City, the atmosphere should be one of the loudest of the entire Round of 32.
What Comes Next
The winners of the Round of 32 will move into the Round of 16, where the bracket becomes even more unforgiving.
